I think I'm going to use NVM in Brimingham to fit my JB4; any feedback on them please let me know!

They told me the ewg harness is a complete waste of time unless you are running meth (which I'll never do) ; I bought the harness as it was recommended on this forum so I'm now a little confused ! What do you guys think ?

Sus,

Having started with JB4 with old board and no EWG/FF harnesses on my EWG car then moved onto a JB4 EWG board c/w EWG and FF harness I can say NVM are wrong. The car gained about 20-25 extra BHP and 30+ lbft of torque with a much smoother delivery.

On the EWG cars, without EWG harness hooked up, the only way to build extra boost is JB4 duping the DME into thinking target boost aren't being achieved. This is more or less how other piggybacks work and there's a limit to how much additive boost these incl Jb4 will give in both better incremental control and higher gains across the range not just at the peak.

With EWG connected, JB4 can control WG directly. Initially BMS saw issues with AFR's going to lean as higher boost were being dialled in. This resulted in safeguards in both DME and JB4 cutting in either switching JB4 into map 4 [bypass mode] and or DME putting engine into "limp" mode. Hence the need for FF to be plugged in with EWG harness so as JB4 can control fuel rail directly.

The autotuning map 5 can delivery some superb full range gains by achieving boost targets safely in terms of ign adv, AFR and PWM [load on turbo] with EWG. W/o EWG, map 5 will be nowhere near as much fun........

May explain why £95 from NVM as you can more or less install JB4 w/o EWG harness on a hot engine in 20-30mins as a newbie. With EWG harness, you have to let the engine cool down [which on these cars takes a while] to access the OE EWG plug to disconnect and mate up corresponding EWG loom plugs.

Your choice at the end of the day.

Thanks very much BP for taking the time to reply .

Having read your post , I feel much more inclined to use our friend in Hayes and pay the 250/300 ; although I can't help feel that's on the steep side ; doesn't even include a custom map 6 at that price .

Oh well , guess I'll have to go without protein shakes for a month :(

Sus - Don't worry - EWG enabled JB4 and some all bran will help balance the solids :escape: :eek2:
Did I say I failed at med school, didn't see the end of the 1st term - never did know why..........

:lol2:

Gotta say , I'm finding my (guesstimated) 340bhp a little of the boring side now ; need this jb4 sorted asap

Might take a trip down to see Jason Wednesday morning and see if I can twist his arm to do a "cash discount" :sterb:

Shame you failed at med school , things must have worked out in the end if you can afford such flash motors :spotman:

The advice was based on the mods.. a N55 running a decat and JB4... MAP 5 is a varying boost target map it is not commited to boost by load. Map 5 can hit some good power and yes the EWG harness will allow boost specified to climb higher sooner. But on N55 cars we have tested on MAP 2 (dyno) the EWG harness made no difference to peak power. The latest firmware for OBD_EWG has made some great difference on MAP 2 and the fuelling.

Each to their own, we can only advise on current mods and setup. If you plan on meth, with fmic then EWG harness is a must.
Many thanks for your input :)

As I already have the ewg harness , would it add much to the cost to fit it for me ? Can't see any harm .

Lewis,

My experience is with EWG car, JB4 c/w EWG and FF harnesses hooked up, minor intake mods, BCS HFC DP and Super ULP. I have run maps 1, 2, 5, 6 [fettled on a dyno twice] and 7 [with NF race OB].

I started using Shell V power nitro and in maps 2, 5 and 6 saw 15-15.5 psi solid boost. Recently, switched to Tesco Momentum 99 and am seeing regular 16-16.5psi.

An EWG car with DP without EWG harness will not deliver map 2 additive target boost levels [~6 psi]. Any delta between map 1 and map 2 will be less noticeable without EWG harness.

Latest FW for both positap and OBD connection have partial adaption for maps 1 and 2. Without EWG harness might mean JB4 will "learn down" in terms of delivered boost, as opposed to aiming at optimal settings, to land lower boost targets.

Likewise, map 5 has the capability to hit 18.5psi, which cannot be delivered without EWG harness. JB4 map 5 will still deliver a robust boost curve but levels about 1.5psi lower than others can expect to see with EWG wires installed.

Hi Blind,

I would love to see your logs, what was the av ign timing and afr? .. We have never had problems hitting 16psi without EWG harness. As said no two logs on MAP 5 will be the same as boost is undefined and constantly adapts to load and afr so 18.5psi is not a constant and 16-17 psi is more than acceptable. Map 2 has seen best consistent results for us on both PWG and EWG cars for reliability with subtle intake and exhaust mods.

If one struggles to hit boost then EWG harness is also recommended. We have run map 6 with custom boost levels with an EWG harness/RACE fuel and seen huge gains :)
Think I'll definitely make the long journey up to see you , maybe next week ?

Let's get this jb4 on with the ewg harness and see what she can do !!!!

Do you have any 11am slots next week ? Do you have a dyno so we can post results here ?

Yes we have dyno facilities available. Call us on 0121 448 7515 to book.
Sent you an email mate

Out of interest - do you think it would be beneficial upgrading the intercooler or shall I leave this until I upgrade the turbo ?

Lewis,

Agree - 18.5psi is a boost cap for map 5, never said it was a constant.

If NVM are claiming 16-17psi on pump fuel w/o direct WG control and good driveability, I think a few of us seasoned JB4 users on here would love to see you logs and map 6 settings !!!

Please publish or PM so as I/we can try for ourselves to hopefully endorse NVM to others on the forum, promote your expertise and establish NVM as the "JB4 go to" sponsor here in the UK.

The current UK JB4 supplier has got a too varied reputation so NVM have everything to gain and nothing lose !!

BP.
