Been looking at online lease deals for the missus...

Question is, we have always had her car insured in my name, as I always have company cars it seems a waste not to use my 11 years NCD. So if we got a lease car but the finance was in her name as she wants to pay for it, can we still insure it in my name with her as a named driver?

As I understand the V5 would have the lease company as the owner?

That's called fronting and is illegal.

If she is the main driver, the insurance should be under her name and she can build up her own no claims.

But the answer to your question... It can be done. They are separate legal documents that you sign. Lease company is the owner, you are/she is the registered keeper.

obviously wouldn't condone anything illegal, just know if you buy someone else can take on the finance but the car is registered in someone else's name...

like when a parent buys a car but the kid insures the vehicle?

OK just had to check this with my insurer....

They said its fine as she is my partner, if it was a friend or relative that did not live at the same address it would be a problem.

I asked if it was illegal, they said only if you have no direct connection or ties to the registered keeper of the vehicle! :)

they said the only issue is me been the main driver, but I will be, as she only drives if needed and if she is on nights, i.e. I drive both cars more than her anyway, she only drives when it is absolutely necessary!

all good.... I can see where the confusion came from, I did not make myself clear!

Sounds like a great deal for you if she pays for the car and you're the main user. :lol2:

I'd be very surprised if an insurer told you it's only fronting in those circumstances as that's not correct at all.

Loads of parents insure their children's car in their name to keep costs down. Even though they have connections to the person, might even drive the car and live in the same house, it's still fronting and illegal.

Would it not work out really expensive to lease a brand new car if she rarely uses it?

It sounds to me like the OP isn't really fronting as he's the main driver of the car anyway, although I'm surprised what the insurance company old him.

Fronting was rife when I first passed my test, people would buy a Mini which was the cheapest insurance making sure it had third party any car and then buy an XR2 or similar and insure in their parents name. This is why the put a stop to it.

Can the lease be in joint names to get round any issue?

Some insurance companies ask if the car is registered in your name when taking out the policy.

The car will be registered as the lease company as the owner.

Will the lease company allow the car to be insured as another driver as the main user? Won't they want the persons who leases the car to be the insured party?

What about GAP insurance? It seems most people take it these days to cover the risk of buying a new car. Will the GAP insurance company allow GAP insurance when it's different people on the insurance policy that is down on the finance agreement?

There appears a few things that could all go wrong in this scenario.
