Ground Zero do a full upgrade for the 1er - there's even a how to on their web site and it gets good reviews too.

Price wise, they are about the same as the earthquakes but I'd assume a lot easier to get hold of.

I have just found out that the GZBR 200BMW come as a pair so it looks like it is an even better deal.

Total for 2 subs and adapter plates ÂŁ164 (caraudiodirect will do free shipping if you ask for a deal).

Anyone know if these can be driven from the Alpine upgrade amp?

I've done the upgrade, but the stock subs could do with having just that little bit more ompf... would be happy to change the subs, but not if it meant having to drive them from a separate amp...

I don't see why they can't be driven from the Alpine upgrade amp. The factory subs aren't very good and produce quite a "muddy" sound and these will probably give a clearer sound with much better sound separation and punch with the Alpine amp.

Thanks mate - only ask because people have posted before that the earthquake subs don't work too well if only powered from the Alpine amp... but, I guess, anything has to be a better than the stock subs (which are a bit underwhelming in my opinion).

Tempted to give these a go.

If someone puts these in and wants rid of a factory underseat sub (as i am one of the unlucky some who only has one) then I'll totally buy it off them.

Not fitted them - but looking at the instructions in the link I can see the following:

- The magnets on the back are pretty puny. A big magnet is generally a good thing for speakers
- The frequency response curve on page 3 is a lot better for the mid/high (flatter and there is actually some treble) but the bass is no better than the 6" speaker.
- Rating is 100 WRMS vs. Earthquakes which are 150W RMS. Standard 6"ers are estimated 50W RMS
- Earthquakes are a special construction to get long excursion from a shallow fit. Ground zeros are standard construction

I'm a bit surprised as I would have expected the <50Hz response to look better on paper than that. Ultimate proof in the pudding is a listening test but on paper, I'd be surprised if they were better.

Mind you all comes down to price - these are going for about 70 quid each (+ brackets)

So are getting on for 2/3 the price of the earthquakes (by the time you ship the buggers over from the US and pay duty)..

car sounds utterly crap from the outside when there is any bass playing
Yes, it's pretty ropey. I think it's the bass speakers venting out into the sills so you get farty bass on the outside of the car when it's turned up. Sounds great on the inside though.

Great for embarrasing the missus in petrol stations though when she has to walk across the forecourt to dirty ghetto bass coming out of a 1-er :lol2:

Mine sounds ok ish once you have played around with the settings, but only at say half volume as soon as you turn it up or put some bass heavy sounds on, it all goes a bit pete tong.

I think I am going to upgrade the amp and then get a sub and amp for the boot!

If you want to be a rude boy and need the whole world to hear what you playing just wind down your windows! lol!
You won't hear much outside of the car as it's too well sound proofed, you only here the farting noise off the subs as they vent into the sills, you could seal them up would tighten up the bass a little but you'll loose a bit of low end and volume as they'll have to be driven harder which could also cause the voice coils to over heat!
I think for aftermarket replacements you have to go with earth quake they make the L7 ones and the SWS series and both give very good bass for extremely shallow fitting I'm very happy with my L7 setup and the bass i get yes it's not quite as deep as a cheap 10" but it's not that far off! And certainly goes nearly as loud as you have two of them! The thing is I love it because they are pretty lightish and they are under the seats so you get the sound in the cabin rather than behind and you also don't loose any of the boot that is already tiny in first place! And also no once can break into the rear screen and pinch something thats not there!
