Hard time starting - only when warm!

Over the past few weeks I've noticed when Ive driven somewhere, leave it an hour or so and then start it back up, its struggling to start. It fires up but the cars a bit lumpy then, the rev needle bobs up and down ever so slightly. Twice today its done it but its only after you've been driving for a bit! Fires up great first thing in the morning!

Edited to add: Please help me haha!! Ive had loads of issues with the car being lumpy, coil packs etc and whilst these symptoms aren't the same I'm starting to consider getting rid!

what engine? Petrol? Diesel? Give some clues? (PS on tappatalk so can't see signatures if it's in there)

Warm start problems are almost always fuel, due to fuel being a lot thicker when cold so easier to create the required pressure)

Yeah its in the signature, I didn't realise they didn't show in tapatalk

its a 2009 116i (2.0) petrol

Ive had some body work done today and the guy who did it said he noticed my car was a little funny on start up, and that was without me mentioning. I have tried taking videos and of course when you press camera instead of flash, it happens again but not when the video is running!

it can be anything from a simple valve which isn't holding the pressure at the injectors (fuel circulates through a loop past the injectors and a valve stops it going back so when you start the car you already have fuel pressure) down to a faulty injector or fuel pump. Someone that knows what they are doing can diagnose it pretty quickly usually.

Cheap at home tries would include fuel pump relay

would the above cause any codes to come up. Whenever I've been to my local dealer for warranty work they've always maintained that "No error codes means no fault". I know its vague and varies but is this a relatively cheap fix or are we talking hundreds?

unlikely I wouldn't have thought. Local dealers arn't massively into fault diagnosis as they don't work on old cars typically. A good independent or even better a fuel specialist

Cold it starts up brilliantly, today for example I nipped out for lunch, parked the car up, left it half an hour and when I got back in it was cranking a bit, mid way through it goes weak as though its about to give up then fires up but the car shakes a little, you can feel it in the peddles if you rest your foot on them! Other times its fine.

Hi,
I am experiencing the same problem on a 57 plate 120i petrol.
I've had two injectors & spark plugs changed. Coils were checked.
After spending ÂŁ800, the problem still remains.
I had the fuel pressure checked in diagnosis and was fine.
I am thinking it might be a duff fuel pump relay causing problems when hot or a dodgy sensor.
Please help !

Warm start issues, in my experience, are also commonly caused by a failing camshaft sensor.

I’m having the same issue on my E88 118i cabriolet 2010, after looking around a fair amount, one solution has been raised which makes sense, could this be a coolant temperature sensor, giving the wrong reading when hot and adding too much or todo little fuel when the engine is hot. Seems like a cheap and quick fix. I’ll keep you updated, I’m determined to get to the bottom of this. however if anyone has had the solution please let me know 👍
