Is it usual for the handbrake to be completely inefficient requiring a really hefty tug to stop the car moving whilst still in D, squeak badly if you've not managed to stop moving and, having finally stopped, the car lurching forward when taking your foot off the footbrake? :?

Sounds like a typical auto to me. When engaged in D the auto box will try to move the car all be it very slowly and the same if it is in reverse. I generally don't use the handbrake unless I have the box in N as at this point the driveline is disconnected and therefore the engine cannot hold you.

The degree to which the engine moves the car when you take your foot off the brake or release the handbrake without touching the accelerator may be more severe in your car.

Have you driven an auto before? It sounds the same as mine to be honest but you may not be used to driving an auto.

I've driven autos before, just not owned one but I do understand they drag the car forward whilst in D and never had problems with the handbrake holding them before.

My manual handbrake is completely useless and if I didn't leave my car in gear it would roll away

Yeah sounds normal to me. Don't understand why you would want to apply the handbrake when in D though??

I don't suppose it has an intelligent handbrake/auto box which temporarily disconnects drive to the wheels when you pull the handbrake on.

Oh no, I guess it doesn't otherwise it wouldn't creep at the lights.

Just tap the Park button. 10 times easier and has the same effect.
Or keep your foot on the brake pedal... :D
Nope and Nope.

I do not believe it is recommended to keep swapping between D and P or D and N when temporarily stopped. Apparently, it's best to stay in D - amended to read D in lieu of my erroneous P - I meant D.

Bad practice and potentially dangerous. It just pi$$es me off that car companies are advocating this very poor practice with stop/start technology.

Surely it's worse to stop a car that's trying to move with a handbrake than to just switch to park.
I'm not sure. Luckily I'm not in that situation where I'm stationary for long enough to worry too much.

I was obviously taught to drive in a manual, but the same advice given to see still makes sense either way.

When stopped at a set of lights, for example, then you put the car in neutral and apply the handbrake. As, if you sit with your clutch dipped in gear and on the brakes waiting, and someone hits you from behind, you risk your feet coming off the pedals and driving off into whatever danger is in front of you.

Where does it give the guidelines for using the auto? Just to help me understand where they're coming from with the not switching from D to P/N??

Driven in the US? Where nearly every car is an auto?
"Everyone" holds their car in D with their foot on the brake. Yes, blinding everyone behind.
And....they leave a fair gap between each car in case of foot slip/car creep!! Drivers get very edgy if you stop too close behind! They will move forward if there is space.

Moreover, traffic lights are set up for autos. No red, red/amber (to engage manual gear), then green as in the UK.

No. Hold the car in D. Red goes straight to green.....and go!

I would never put the car in N or P at traffic lights.

in slight defence of the auto here - my mlite is in getting its most annoying creak sorted out (hopefully!) - and they've loaned me a brand new 118i manual. It's a decent enough car - does the job (mind you - so do cars costing lots less than £24k!)
The biggest surprise with it is the pedal box - they seem to have put the clutch pedal where the brake pedal should be, then bunched the other 2 right up next next to it. For me it means that the auto isn't merely a nice-to-have - but an essential.
