Green grease?

318 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  nivens
Finally got round to swapping my summer wheels back on today but noticed when I came to clean the winters that one of the rears had a thick grease pretty much coating the barrel. Some strong APC cleaned it off and it seemed to be green in colour but I can't see any other signs of it on the car, I also wasn't paying enough attention to know what side I took it off either.

Anyone any idea what this could have come from? I did have both rear wheel bearings swapped out over the winter, could it just be sling from the new bearings being over greased?

Sounds like CV joint grease. check the rubber gators haven't been damaged when replacing wheel bearings. There will probably be a coating of grease around the suspension area
I'll need to have another look tomorrow, I don't remember noticing anything else covered in grease but I can't say I'll be surprised if it turns out I've paid yet another mechanic for cack-handed work
Looks like the boot has a small hole in it and by the looks of things it's easier to fit a new/refurbished axle instead of dismantling it to replace the boot. Does anyone know which aftermarket brand is good quality or if there's anywhere doing decent refurbished OE stuff?

Has anyone had much experience with patching boots with silicone rtv or similar to get me a couple months down the road or is that a complete waste of time?

I’ve seen them greased back up using a syringe then repaired using vulcanising bike tyre patches, but that was an only fools level bodge on a car that wasn’t worth fixing properly!
It's just going to be a bodge so I can get to work and back for a few weeks without destroying the joint. I've got neither time or money at the minute after moving, as usual this car picks it's moments to need both 😂
