Hi,
Has anyone got a guide on changing the Glow Plugs on E87 N47 118D engine, please? Engine takes a few cranks to get started in this cold weather, need to get to it ASAP, before the real cold sets in.
Thanks

Inlet manifold off, swap them over, basically.

Soak them in a good release oil like Plus Gas a few hours before you attempt to remove them. They shouldn't be excessively tight (about 12ftlb from memory - don't quote me on that), if they're not playing ball, soak them again and try again later. If you snap one off you're in a world of hurt.

My OEM plugs were BERU, so I replaced them with the same.

Hey,

I managed to get these changed without removing the Inlet Manifold. All nuts loose, but couldn't get the Inlet manifold out. Nonetheless, the Plugs were an absolute PIA to remove. Had to soak in Plusgas, loosen, tighten, loosen tighten etc, but managed to get them out, without snapping them. New one's installed, and now I have developed a rough start, which wasn't there before (in Summer). I am suspecting, the chamber might be dirty and therefore the new plugs not doing the job, so need to ideally need to get the manifold out, so its easier to work with.

I struggled with the power rail and the hose that goes over the engine into the fuse box. Looking at the Inlet manifold removal thread, the suggestion was to remove the rail, and manipulate the rail out? Is this correct? I couldn't see how I could do this? Unless I unclipped the actual individual Fuel Injector wires, and removed the small wires, from the rail itself........

Also what's the best way to clean out the Glow Plug holes, from dirt and debris?

Had this issue -

Regards

Hi there!

Yesterday wanted to replace my glow plugs on my 118d N47 engine. What seemed to be a straight forward procedure turned ou to be a pain in the arse.

My Carly for BMW tester showed glow plugs on cylinder 1 and 2 faulty so i knew that would impact both warming up and dpf regenerations.

Only managed to replace one plug, because even if i unscrewed all 5 screws of the inlet manifold, that wouldn't want to release. And there's no physical acces to the other 3 glow plugs. A least not a safe one, to be able to clean, grease, and do a proper job...

So, how do we release the manifold? I intend to give it one more go the next saturday, hopefuly it would be successful.
Any advice is welcome.
🙂

If you take away the connector plug chassis you'll have just about enough room. I managed to replace my plugs without removing the intake. Best friend was needle nose pliers to pop the plugs off. Then 10mm deep socket with extension. The manifold is the five or so bolts and then a yank. It will come out. Don't give up on it. Try and get the Inlet hose out of the way.
