Gear linkage

Guys,

Is there anyway on the 1er that you can adjust the gear linkage?
Let me explain, coming from VAG you could do this easily on their manual boxes.
Basically you pull up the gear gator, put the car into 2nd and there is a locking pin which will lock the gearbox into one specific place, you can then go to the engine bay and adjust the spring clamp linkages that run down the selectors for the gears.

Is there anything like this on the 1er?
Reason I ask, my cars gearbox is far from smooth, but moreso is the shear amount of play in the gear lever itself when in gear? Going over road bumps causes it to wobble like hell!

Any ideas?

The 1er gear box is known to be "notchy". Most people just change the gear box oil to make the changes a tad smoother. I'm sure Marco_Polo will say something soon as he's a guru on these things :)

Yeah I've been reading up on it, it's something that I'll change when I can but it seems ridiculously stiff to get into gears? And the amount of wobble on the gear stick seems excessive?

I'm not aware of any adjustment in the linkage, but some members have replaced the spherical bush below the knob if it's become sloppy.

120d and 123d have a pretty manly box. Maybe consider a weighted BMW Clubsport gearknob to hammer them home? I've got a heavy Stormwerks gearknob in mine. As Dan said, a dose of Redline MTL can help those changes too

Mine doesn't wobble too much, but I have the short shift gear stick. Have you popped the gaitor up to see if anything is loose ? Either that or man handle your stick every time you change gear. It's only really 1st and 2nd that's stiff, im sure you find the other gears quite smooth

Thanks, helpful as always gents :)

I'll have a look under the gator, gonna get the interior cleaned properly today anyway, it seems worse when approaching traffic lights etc, 1st, 2nd and 3rd are all tough gears, 6th can be aswell :(

Is it a hare job to change the bush you mention ?

I've got the SSK on mine and even prior to this the shift from first to second is sometimes impossible. I can only describe it as feeling like you haven't pressed the clutch down far enough and that you're forcing it into the gate, sometimes I have to abort and double declutch to get it in, mines done that all along but I've almost built up enough strength in my left arm to overcome it. Might change the oil in the next few weeks, while I'm changing all the other fluids. Is the MTL still the front runner or are there some new entries that I'm unaware of?

Number 9 might solve my problem with the vibration and wobble I'm getting.

I'll mention it to Stratstone when they have the car back :)

Any update on this folks?im going to suggest number 9 to my dealer then maybe suggest replacing the bush, interestingly my box is a bit less notchy when the outside temperature is > 3 degrees and when number 7 makes a plasticy springy noise when changing up (it doesn't do this all the time). For sure it is worse when in heavy traffic and using the lower gears more.

I'm als going to ask the dealer to bleed the clutch as the new one was fitted 3 weeks ago and after it all was slicker and now has deteriorated again - interestingly during last weeks cold spell....
