The 130i is coming up for another major service at 95k, at the moment it's got Full BMW Service History, but at £421.80 is it actually worth it? or just false economy on a 9 year old car?

I currently also have BMW warranty on the car with only 1 claim on an FRM fault, its faultless otherwise.

I could do it myself in an hour but I want to keep some sort of dealer SH not to effect resale. Is it time to go indi and cancel the warranty or stick with the main dealer?

FBMWSH is worse than a good indy in my view as they only look at certain things. I bought an e46 with FBMWSH that drove dreadfully as they had never bothered to check the suspension or drive the car. I would go indy every time after that.

I'm in the same boat and decided to go Indi.

I bought the car last year with FBMWSH and then put a bmw warranty on it. I figure the bmw service history is only worth a few hundred quid at best when I come to sell it (which will be some years yet) and at that time I can show any prospective buyer the warranty and invoices for any warranty work carried out.

The man maths tells me the money I save by no longer taking it for servicing at the dealers pays for the warranty.

I also have a good reputable bmw specialist garage who do my servicing.

I have a few good BMW indys in my area and i've been thinking about the same thing too. My car also has full BMWSH but i hate dealers and had bad experiences with them (other manufacturer dealers not bmw).

The discounted rates are on the minor service only. The major service doesn't get the same discounted treatment.

Man maths are definitely telling me to go indi, what I've already spent in main dealer servicing definitely won't be recouped any time soon.

Can I keep the warranty with approved Indis?

I'd be just as happy if not actually prefer to have the service history to be carried out by a specialist Indy rather than a main dealer.

From my experience they are more helpful and often more knowledgeable too!

Unless it's a high value specialist car, not having a few main dealer stamps isn't going to have any impact on the value of the car come resale.

I punched my plate in for my previous 335i.

I remember when I had it the big service with plugs was down to £250. The quote just now is £300, which is a good bit less than £421..
When I put my reg in on bmwservice it tells me £405, when I rang up they said it was £421.80 Inc VAT.

Id have thought the *35i would have been more expensive!

I'd imagine the real cost is probably near identical given both are 6 cylinder engines.

The prices I'm getting are £132 for an oil service, £189 for and Microfilter, then £300 for oil, spark plugs, microfilter and air filter.

I wonder where the other 40% markup is coming from?

123k miles on mine, still in warranty, still full BMW history.
Thought about going Indie but very glad I didn't since my Xenons are giving me ball ache again at the moment. 3rd visit in as many years next week for another different but similar fault, not an obvious fix since the problem is intermittent. I'm pretty experienced elec/mech fault finding doing it for at living at sea so appreciate how difficult they can be to find.
5 plus servicing or whatever it's called is pretty good value so I'll be staying with BMW, and whatever some on here might say that FBMWSH will help come resale time.

ETA - my dealer does the old car discount on all services/parts, not just the oil service.

Extended warranty through BMW (mondial) will only cover you if it has full BMW service history.

So if you have that go BMW. If not take it where you like
Hmmm I may have overlooked the need to go bmw for servicing if I want to keep the warranty. May have to check my service book :|

It may have changed as I know you can go anywhere you like under manufacture warranty.

But as extended warranty is an insurance product pretty sure they mandate BMW service only on it. Have a read of their t and c's
Yeah thinking about it, it was an MOT I had at the indi.
I made a warranty claim on the DSC unit before Christmas and they checked my service book so must of been ok.

The main dealer price for the oil change only is actually pretty good and all the specalists I rang and spoke to were more expensive.

But for anything else, a specalist is the way forward.

I'm only going to bother getting the oil changed annually at the stealership then do the other bits myself.

I've already done the plugs and air filter. Both are easy. I could do them again in an hour.

When cars are new enough to have warranties, I understand people taking cars to BMW dealerships for service, but I am astonished to see 10 year old cars there for major works - some people spend more than their cars are worth on maintenance and servicing!

Older BMWs make quite sensible and cost-effective daily drivers if they are maintained at independent garages. The money that BMW owners waste on main dealer servicing is unlikely to be recouped at sale time on cars of over (say) 5 or 6 years old. When you consider that you pay at least double for most jobs at BMW, it doesn't take many visits to make a massive difference.

eg - front brake pads on my 135i would have cost over £300 at Specialist Cars Tring. £150 with Brembo pads at an Independent. Cam chain on another owners 120D - quote £2300 by BMW and about £1200 elsewhere.

However, getting a BMW stamp in the book for an oil change is often enough to convince people that you have a BMW service history! I do lots more maintenance on my cars than the computer dictates, so it's had lots of oil changes and brake pads that BMW don't know about...

I've just paid £200 for an oil service and brake fluid change on mine, which I think is quite reasonable.

What exactly are you having done for £421?
I paid the same when it was the minor service and fluid, just wait until your next major service comes around!
