I'm looking to throw around some thoughts I have about the possibility of upgrading the base audio system in my F40. I'd quite like to make one change at a time as ideally I don't want to spend an absolute fortune.

Initially I'm thinking there would be an improvement if I replaced the speakers in the front doors whilst also adding tweeters, I want direct replacements really and the Audison APBMW K4E seem reasonable. This would of course add the extra expense of replacing the required interior trim to give me the grilles for the tweeters near the mirror/A pillar area.

I could of course buy the version I've seen with the tweeters located in with the door speaker but would that be detrimental to the sound having the tweeters sitting lower down?

After that if I feel I need to do more work do I look to add an amp or replace the under seat woofers? If I decide to go with an amp would I be best to stick with Audison, and does adding an amp cause any issue with the in car noises such as Sat Nav announcements or parking sensor tones?

Finally, if I do get some door speakers with a crossover what is the best way of safely fitting the crossover? So for example would you look to locate it in a certain area of the door, how would you secure it?

Thanks for looking.

Summary of expenditure:
4x Focal IC BMW 100L door speakers ÂŁ145
2x Focal ISUB BMW 4 under-seat speakers ÂŁ280
Fitting kit for rear doors ÂŁ40
Focal Impulse 4.320 4-channel amplifier ÂŁ102
MATCH PP-BMW 1.7RAM wiring harness (to be modified) ÂŁ90
Molex connectors ÂŁ19
Total ÂŁ676
All new, except the 2 subs and the amp, which were from eBay
Ignoring the cost of my labour, of course!

Without the amp the sound was greatly improved from the doors, but little difference from the subs.
Having then installed the amp it was all working very nicely for me.
If you want proper hi-fi and car-shaking bass then buy a quieter car and spend a lot more on the upgrades.

Hi new on here but looking at doing pretty much exactly what you have.

I have a base audio setup in my 118i with the small underseat subs and one speaker in each door.

I have a unit in the trunk which I am assuming is the RAM module.

My under seat subs have a 2pin plug and can’t see any plugs for doors so wiring must be coming from the RAM and within the harness.

What I am trying to do is :

1.Replace front door speakers with component kit
2.Replace under seat woofers with HK ones
3.Leave rear door speakers as is for now

I would like to fit an aftermarket 5 channel amp and take clean line input before it is amplified by the RAM module if possible and then amplify the front speakers and underseat subs and leave the rear speakers running from RAM.

You mention using a MATCH PP-BMW 1.7RAM cable and modifying this - would be really helpful to get some info on this as I only need one pair of full range inputs for the amp.

Thanks in advance !
