F20 116i noise from rear suspension area

I purchased BMW F20 model 116i new 1 series mid Dec 2011. After approx 3 weeks a 'bumping' noise appeared when travelling over uneven/undulating road surfaces from the rear nearside suspension area. Garage has checked out but can find nothing amiss but does accept the 'bumping' noise is there.
Anyone else out there with similar problems ?????

I know this is off topic but please can you tell me what mpg you are averaging.

I'm seriously thinking about ordering a F20 but can't decide to go for 116i or 116d.

Cheers

Back to topic! I have been in contact with my local dealer regerding this problem. According to them they are not aware of this being a common problem for the new F20. Surprises me since there are a lot of threads in different forum taking this up.

However I will pay them a visit within a week and let them hear for themselves. I will report back on how this proceeds.

I have identical same problem on my 2012 Bmw 116i (f20).. Have already visited local dealer who immediately determined the noise and advised there is something wrong with rear suspension. They also advised that there is another f20 on their garage complaining about same noise. According to my dealer, BMW Germany already aware of this problem and working for a solution at the moment. They got my number and told me that they will call me back whenever BMW Germany give them an advise & instruction for this noise and it's solution..

If anything hear from my garage I will let you know..

I've also got the same irritating noise from the rear suspensio on my 116i sport.
It's driving me insane! :D
Cars going in end of the week to get the automatic air conditioning replaced so my dealers going to attempt to fix this aswell.
My dealer thinks its a lose panel somewhere...I think it's suspension related though.

I paid my local BMW dealer (Västerås, Sweden) a visit yesterday and took one of the senior technicians on a ride so that he could hear this annoying noise for himself. He admitted there was a distinct sound from the rear (both sides) that should not be there.

Back in the garage he took a look from the "outside" but could not find anything (no suprise). Then he followed the BMW procedure, meaning running a check through the computer, which is a must if there is a garantuee issue. Next thing is that they will register my case and wait for answers from BMW Sweden and BMW Germany. They will contact me as soon as they have an answer and in best case a solution to the problem.

If they return to me and say that this is an unknown problem I will not be a happy and satisfied customer...

My dealer is "admitting" that this is a "known" problem, and have something to do with the suspension/shock (can't find the word i am really looking for...) in the back.

I will leave my car on March 9. Then they think that the correct spare parts are available and that they can fix this for me. Remains to be seen...

Any idea how common this problem is outside Scandinavia and Germany? On several German sites you have a lot of "angry" threads about this specific problem, which in German is called "Klappergeräusche im Heckbereich".

I'll keep you posted about the progress regarding my car.

Update on my F20 116i with suspension noise/problem - garage has checked settings related to suspension and all found to be within tolerances set by BMW. Garage has raised a 'PUMA' with BMW and car is being returned to garage 12/3/12 for a couple of days for further inspection and posible involvement of UK Technical Manager to hopefuly solve problem.
I intend to hand over copy of this forum to confirm problems out there on this model.
I will advise forum on outcome of vist to garage, hopefully it will be good news.

Thanks for the update, and good luck in getting it fixed. Mine sounds like I've a load of junk loose in the boot, so I am waiting with interest for a solution. I'm increasingly sure that the problem we have is mechanical - if you just touch a kerb head on with my nearside left tyre it makes the 'clunk'.

Can you describe this noise for me. I have a really annoying rattle coming from the rear of my car, Ive taken the parcel shelf out and the noise is still there. I get the impression from this thread that the noise in problem vehicles is more pronounced than a rattle that sounds like loose fittings.
I wonder if this will lead to a recall if they do find a problem or whether they will wait for people to complain.

Please check exhaust (back silencer) connection at left/down side of bumper. This rattling coming from a very small screw of back silencer connection. If you shake exhaust pipe by hand (pls do it when it's cold) you will hear this rattling. Solution is simple, a local workshop which is experienced in exhaust job can do a quick and easy isolation for that.Or take the car to offical Bmw garage...

I would imagine BMW would have sussed if it was a rattly exhaust by now, I think it sounds like something a little more in depth.

I just been having a poke about with my week old F20 and was able to replicate the noise from the rear suspension area. I found that with the hand break applied and a firm push on the tailgate there is a very audible squeak. However, release the hand break and apply the same pressure to the tailgate.....no squeak.

I don't know if this is quite the same issue others are experiencing but if you are surely this must be an easy fix as it's clearly something relating to the hand break acting on the discs/suspension.
