Until recently I hadn't been a great advocate of Eco Pro mode (like many others on here I believe) and had only really used it for relaxed cruising on motorways, when the lack of throttle response is not a problem. However, last year my daily commute changed from a 70ml round trip on dual carriageways to a 12ml town drive, often in very heavy traffic. I therefore tried using Eco Pro mode more to see what difference it would make in such conditions. Having now got used to the very soft throttle mapping, I'm finding that Eco Pro delivers an extremely smooth drive and makes the already silky auto box even smoother in heavy stop start town traffic. This is especially so at slow speeds when the engine braking effect from the down shifts can be a little harsh in Comfort or Sport mode.

Eco Pro is also less likely to get you into trouble in the icy conditions we are experiencing at the moment and has the added advantage of delivering marginally better fuel consumption. Using it also makes the transition to Sport mode that much more special when you are on a great road, the conditions are right, and you want to give it some beans. You really need to give Eco Pro a chance before discounting it!

I think all the driving modes have their use and help to make the M135i the brilliant allrounder it is. The stop/start function however still annoys the hell out of me and is the first thing I override when starting up.

Saw this post and saw the name and thought 'I don't remember posting this topic' haha

But on my 125 I only use Eco pro on motorway cruise or when I just filled up my tank and have that moment of fuel saving that never lasts long.

I always use it in combination with the other modes when conditions permit. One thing about Eco mode being sluggish is it makes a roundabout near me almost impossible to step out an manoeuvre in time so I often just switch to comfort in those circumstances.

It is good to have all the modes available and I often switch through them on my daily drive.

In long drives with the family on board I think it's great. On dual carriage ways I stick the car on cruise, turn the cruise off approaching a roundabout, car goes into coast, gently brake, smoothly around the roundabout, on exit press "resume" and the car gently accelerates back up to speed. If I need to over take I just pull the minus paddle a couple of times which give me plenty of acceleration.

A fantastic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde car.

Oh and on runs like that, I get 40+mpg

I have Eco-Pro coded as my default driving mode upon start up simply because of my commute, as you said; mine's a 12 mile mainly through built up areas run through 20 and 30 mph roads. Yesterday the roads were like glass and ungritted so it made the mode all the more useful. I did knock the traction control off for a time yesterday which kicked it back into comfort; had never realised it did that...

On a steady motorway cruise, apart from the zircon being in economy mode (an option I've deselected anyway), I didn't think there was any other fuel saving benefits of eco-pro? If you're travelling a constant speed the fuelling required is the same regardless of driving mode, even in Sport (as long as in manual with 8th gear selected).

I was told Eco altered the battery charging profile (when it could - doesn't do much if it needs a charge), but motorway savings aren't massive. It also dials down electrical drain where possible, heated seats become a bit feeble, etc.

You're right though, there's not a great mpg difference between Eco and Sport when you've got CC.

I only ever use eco mode in town, as soon as I leave it's back in comfort. I do use it on dual carriageways but only if I'm cruising in slow 60mph traffic

Ditto. I find it unsafe in these situations and couldn't possibly think of using it through town as a result.

I always use it on the Mway though when on a run cos I find the air-con turns to a more comfortable level

I with you in this.

A drive in central London the other day with EcoPro switched on proved quite useful. I got 24.9 mpg out the car and it was very smooth progress in heavy traffic.

Also find those endless 50mph sections on the motorway lend themselves nicely to EcoPro.

Rest of the time I don't like this mode so much. Takes a big lump of what the car is about away.
My view is that you don't by an M135i because it's great on fuel. That's what the 118d is for. Good car that goes many miles on a single tank of diesel.

M135i makes a great sound when you open the taps. And I like that sound way to much for EcoPro to take it away. :)

IMO if you can't get out of a roundabout in Eco Pro, there wasn't a gap in the first place...

I certainly wouldn't consider Eco mode unsafe. There are plenty of gutless cars around as standard that can't do the things our cars can. You just have to drive differently. I was in the Fiesta earlier and had to reconsider overtakes and pulling out on roundabouts etc
