I'm getting a noise from behind the passenger side dash. It''s really rather annoying actually. It kind of sounds like a rustling noise. Like somethings look and rubbing or something. I took the glove box out to investigate and couldn't see anything. I took the opportunity to tighten all the nuts I could see. Could it be something under the bonnet?

Engine cover not seated correctly in its rear fixings is a common issue ?
I should of mentioned, it's definitely fitted correctly from what I can see.

Some journeys I won't hear it at all or maybe once. Others it's there half the time! Tends to be when wet it's more quiet.

Something stuck in the fan (cabin ventilation)? Thats under the glovebox. Does the sound change with fan speed, engine speed or road speed? My fan was a rattle before it became a squeak, then after oiling the bearing it is silent. Just a possibility.

I don't think it can be the fan as I've heard it with the fan off :( - Although I will test it with fan speed, just to be thorough.

What oil did you use Nottsknots? I probably need to so mine soon but don't fancy the smell of WD40 in the cabin for a few weeks!
I removed mine and lubed both bearings with a drop of 3 in 1. Bottom bearing is under a wee cover.

Should of mentioned... From a lot of observation it sounds like it's coming from behind the passenger to middle of dash at the very top. It sounds like a flimsy piece of plastic rubbing something. I NEED to get to the bottom of this :|

I don't understand why I can have a journey and maybe hear it over one path of rough road and others where it rattles a lot more.

Could well be the a-pillar trims where they slot into top of dash, all my 1series have had this problem and there is a guide on here to help sort it by removing and adding some tape etc to help stop it moving around.

Edit to add here is a link to sorting it, might not be that but they are probably making some noise! - " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the suggestion. They were making some noise but i padded them out with some black velcro (soft side) and that helped a lot. This is a different noise. Might try and get a sound clip.

By "very top" do you mean near the windscreen, or further back towards the cabin?

Have you tried:
1) taking out the centre console panels (heater controls, head unit)? - might be something loose to the passenger side in there
2) looking down the windscreen vents (easier from outside looking in) - I lost a screwdriver down there, but if you've had a windscreen replacement, there could be glass or detritis down there. A bent coat hanger with a neo magnet got that out :)
3) take out the pollen filter (top rear of the engine bay) - could be anything in there :eek2:

Good luck.

I will try all these and report back. Didn't think about taking the pollen filter out to investigate there.
