I've joined this forum for sometime now and found this forum extremely resourceful when it comes to solving common problem in the e87. This is my first post here hopefully you all can shed some light to my idrive problem that is driving me crazy.

I am from Hong Kong and currently owned an 06 e87 130 m sport (Japanese spec) that comes with a CCC idrive professional (the one with flip screen), sat nav and Hifi system professional. The idrive controller and the button on the steering (* button which i set it to flip the screen open) occasionally don't respond when i pressed it. This usually happened when i didn't drive the car for 3-4 days. When the button is not working:
1) i cannot spin the button with my hand
2) i cannot hear any warning chimes (like seat belt, forgot to release the handbrake warning sound)
3) the "menu" button on the idrive controller is lid (meaning there are power going to the controller)
4) when I flip the idrive screen by hand, the screen displayed the main menu, when i pressed on the volume button, it will go between muted/unmuted but when i load a CD or use aux, there is no sound.
5) when i scan for code, there is a fault code E18D (cannot wake up the network 3 times)

I've researched on this topic extensively on the internet and tried the following:

1.) 3 button reset (didn't work)
2.) Checked the fuse (all seems ok)
3.) Disconnect the negative terminal and ran a ring break test (after I disconnect and reconnect the negative terminal, the i drive controller would work again, then i ran the ring break test from INPA and the result would return fine, but after i left the car for 3-4 days without driving it the problem would come back)
4.) every time if i took a long trip with the car and left the car overnight, the idrive would work the next day, so i figure it might be something to do with the battery, so i have that changed, then again after 3-4 days of not driving the car, the problem would come back.
5) I also tried replace the idrive controller with a used part, but that didn't make any difference.
6.) I also check the voltage on the battery (with and without ignition on) and the voltage seems fine.

i guess my only solution would be to drive the car everyday, but then this is usually my weekend car, besides, i used to left the car without driven it for 6-7 days without any issue. I am running out of things to try on the car so would be very grateful if any of you can give me something new to check on the system cause i don't really want to replace/upgrade the unit as i am really low on cash.

Whats the voltage across the battery with the engine running.

I would start at replacing the battery, I had problems with the "restraint system failure" messages. Had the battery replaced and no problem since.

When you charge the battery, make sure to use the terminals under the hood, not the battery terminals directly.

thanks for the input! i did replaced the battery and the idrive showed some improvement since.. however, it will still stop responding if i left the car without driving it for more than 4 days. well i just clear the fault code and did a hard reset again and the idrive work again. i am still trying to see whether there is a pattern to this.

i am also thinking to replace the idrive with a professional radio HU, does anyone know if this is plug and play?
