BMW 123d 2008 90k miles.

Took my car for a run to regen the dpf as I know it needed doing as I monitor it with the BTool app. Got everything up to temperature and the regen started and then stopped regen after 1-2 minutes. The coolant temp was up around 95 Deg but I have never seen it that high before. I continued driving and the coolant temp dropped slightly and dpf started to regen again. Temp rose, same thing again, stopped regen.
I pulled the car over and noticed some steam from the radiator (driven through a big rain storm) but also noticed the fan not spinning. Does the regen only happen between a certain temperature and should the fan be on at 94 Deg. Any ideas what could start and stop the reg process. The starting and stopping of the regen process, to me seemed to be linked to the coolant temp (below 94 Deg ok, above 94 Deg, regen stops). Thanks in advance and sorry if this is in the wrong place.
