Did mine the same a couple of weekends ago. Not that hard to do and quite satisfying to see the result!

One point of note from hard won experience; make sure you check your front parking sensors (if fitted) are working correctly BEFORE you fully fit the bumper.

Did not fully push the plug home (tight fit) and had what I think is called a 'learning point'!!!

Any of you Guys fancy offering this as a service to local forum members ?

I know the guide is amazing and does look straight forward but I would still be pretty nervous about taking my front end off :(

I should get this done as I might take the car on a gentle winter track day soon so no doubt I'll manage to score a few flying stones !

Just a bit of advice, I carried out this mod about 12 months ago. No need to removed the bumper, jack the car etc. all carried by removing the kidney grills only.

Thanks, what have you used to secure the mesh in place ? Cable ties ?

p.s.....does that reg plate pass as legal in Oz ? :lol2:

Did you get to the charge cooler without taking the bumper off?
To me it looked like a potential for damaging something without the bumper being off and certainly made it easier in fitting the lower guards, but well done for managing to do it without
I got some really small cable ties off ebay to secure the grills, couple of quid for about 200

HI, excellent guide, I've done the small side grill by removing the grill with nylon wedges. Does the lower front grill come out? I'm a bit loath to remove the whole bumper if the black insert will come out alone.

It's a ridiculous state of affairs and unfortunately this is widespread across German brands. Have had an online strop about the wife's Cayman 718 where the front has 3 totally exposed radiators - not even a token plastic piece of trim. Wear and tear Sir....

Thanks, will persevere and try the external method. Interesting that ZunSport make a business out of providing external meshes for a range of new cars with easily damaged rads. Look very like bigfoots above but at a price. Had to get some for the Cayman rather than face ÂŁ1000 plus to replace.
Even the OPC said they'd fished out a rabbit out of someone's front end. The annoying thing is the companies know there is an issue and either fit 'updated' bits of kit like the m240i or as OEM to the 718GTS but not lower models.

They wonder why people get cynical about them...

I'm going for the external mesh option, as I prefer the look of mesh as opposed to the current open plastic.
Now have all the materials to carry it out.
Will post when finished.

How did you find fitting the mesh without taking the bumper off? Any tips?

Just took delivery of some mesh so going to have a go this weekend

Provided you can get the upper grills out you can access the lower intake from there. You will probably be able to do a neater job with the bumper off, but I managed to do mine without removing it, albeit I did shred my wrists somewhat getting the first grill out. Once you have one out the other is easy as you can access the clips from behind. I basically measured the lower grill aperture and cut the mesh slightly larger. The mesh I used is 5mm stainless steel which was a pita to cut to shape. I ended up with a dremel type tool and a diamond cutting disc. The aluminium mesh would have been a lot easier. I then secured the mesh in place with cable ties.

I've got some stainless steel mesh if anyone wants it. I had loads left over from doing mine.

Would you have a photo of the front lower grille and the kidney grilles as I like the look of the square mess.....nice job !

Just done this as OP's original guide. The 8mm wing bolts (rather one each side as it probably came off for a BMW Approved car bumper respray and they didn't bother putting the upper ones back) came off easy with a ring spanner. Had to replace lower grill anyway due to pheasant strike. And if anyone wants a panel of the eBay black grill for free your welcome to collect from Worcester area. One panel does all.

So thanks OP. Feel slightly safer now as both rads had plenty of dings.
