Crackling speakers on bass frequencies - BMW 1 Series E87

Hi,

I have a BMW 1 Series E87 (with Pro Nav System) and when using the Aux input in the car there is a loud 'crackling/fuzz' on the bass frequencies. When I change to use the CD input the crackling/fuzz disappears. I have replaced my Aux cable with a brand new one so the cable isn't the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

I have been told that the speakers may have 'blown', but if that was the case surely this would happen when playing CDs also?
I have recently installed a second hand Pro Nav System (as the one the car came with as standard was removed by previous owner) into the car, could this be the source of the problem? Loose cables or dodgy headunit perhaps?

Thanks.

What device are you running through the Aux?

Is your cable pre-amp, or one of those crappy 3.5mm to 3.5mm jobbies?
Are you using the same volume on the stereo when you use Aux and CD? Is the source of the Aux turned up to max volume? With the cable plugged in and max volume on the source and the volume set fairly high on the stereo, do you hear any crackling or buzzing when you plug in the aux?

If your speakers were blown you would hear the crackling/buzz on another input source. Seeing as you don't (as you mentioned you tried CD and it disappears), then it's down to the source or the cable you're using. As Marco said, is it a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack or is it a pre-amped cable?
Currently running an iPhone through the Aux, but tried it with other inputs and the result is the same.

I am using a 3.5mm cable (brand new) but I have used those for a while and never had any issues before?

I am pretty sure that the issue only started when I installed the second hand Pro System a month or two ago.

Another point on it (rather strange): the crackling only tends to start after I have been driving for 30mins or so. On short journeys it doesn't happen.
On your first points Sonic:

Yeah I use the same volume for both CD and Aux, I also turned up the volume when using the CD input to see if the crackling appeared, but it didn't (Sound quality was lost but no large amount of crackling).

I have tried turning the volume down on the Aux source but this doesn't affect the crackling.

No crackling when there is no music playing, only on bass periods of music. There is a popping sound when I plug the source into the Aux cable but only the same sound as on any system.
I'd find yourself a cable with a iPhone / Lightening adaptor, see if that helps. Amplifying any signal distorts it slightly, amping it twice often leads to lo-fi, especially if it's struggling with certain low frequencies.

Yeah that's normal, getting the pop when you connect and disconnect. I echo what Marco has said :). Rather than using a 3.5mm jack aux cable, try using a dedicated cable. Should help.
Ok perfect, thanks.

Something like this: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But I am pretty sure that there is no USB input in my car, will that matter?
I *THINK* you should be okay with that but hopefully someone can come along and confirm.
