Feel free to comment on this, but hopefully by the end we'll have an indepth guide as to which phones are compatible, which are semi compatible and which are not.

Please note that as I add to this FAQ I'll delete any relevant posts below

Fully Compatible Phones:
(These phones will syncronize the phone book with the car, not disconnect randomly, able to make calls and receive calls hands free etc)

Motorola: V500, V525, V600, V635, RAZR V3, V3x, Motorazr maxx v6
Nokia: 8910i , 6310i, 6230 ( with V05.21 or higher firmware), 6230i, 6822, 8910, 6021, 7373 Pink, 6280 (The phone firmware version should be 5.92 or higher), 6233, 6300, E50 (but requires Nokia Contact Downloader - see bottom)
Siemens: S55, S65
Sony Ericsson: T610, T616, T618, T630, Z600, K700, S700i, S700 (with R3K004 or higher firmware), K750i, K610i, K850i, Z800i, K810i, W810i, K800i (firmware R1CE001, R1CF001), W850i

HTC TyTN
O2 XDA Orbit
Apple iPhone

Notes:
- If there are many SMS message stored on the K700, connection/disconnection problems may occur
- The S700i does NOT disconnect when more than 10 SMS are stored on the phone, but, does disonnect and reconnect when long SMS are stored on the phone, namely more than 160 characters long
- For the S700 you will need to update the firmware to R3K004, otherwise you will have the disconnection problem due to multiple (more than 10) SMS problem. When you update the only problem which remains is the Long SMS problem (more than 160 characters long SMSs cause disconnections.

Phones with limited compatibility:
Nokia 8800:
It appears the phone has to be the "connection maker". Therefore, you must not allow the car to auto-connect with the phone. After you reject the cars incoming connection, you must navigate to bluetooth paired devices and connect with the BMW manually

Nokia Communicator:
It does not sync with the BMW bluetooth system.
Can connect and make/receive calls but no voice control or address book transfer. (have tried the nokia 810 manager software but to no avail)

Compatible phones without phonebook transfer:
(These phones will not disconnect randomly, be able to make calls and receive calls hands free etc, but not syncronize the phone book with the car)

Nokia: 3650, N-Gage, 6600, 6630, 6820, 7600, N95 (the numbers have to be transferred manually), 6680
Samsung: D500, V500
LG: Prada, Viewty

Phones known to randomly work:
(These phones will work sometimes but not everytime.)

Sony Ericsson: P910i
HP: iPAQ HW6915

Phones known to not work at all:
(These phones will not connect, syncronize the phonebook etc)

Ipaq: h3640

Phones that have not been tested at all:
[if any members can confirm, please post here]
Nextel i880 phone
HTC P4350
HTC TyTn II (aka Kaiser)
Motorola Rizr Z8
Sony Ericsson P990i
Sony Ericsson W910i
Nokia 2630

Nokia N73
Sony Erisson W810i (on Orange)

Installing Nokia Contact Downloader for E50
Please check: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Needs a bit of tweaking, but in the end, all works fine...

Make sure that the Contacts Manager s/w is running BEFORE you try to pair the phone with the car.

Steps to be followed:

1. On the E50, in Bluetooth paired devices, delete the pairing for the car

2. In the car, delete the pairing to your phone

3. On the phone, set up a new synch profile (press the menu key, then select Connect, then Synch)that synchs Contacts, but no other applications. Under Connection Settings for this profile, make sure the data bearer is set to Bluetooth.

4. Download Nokia 810 Contact Download Application from here " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and install on your phone. Follow the setup prompts on your phone to complete the installation

5. Put the car kit in search mode

6. On the phone, go to Contacts / Options / Synchronization / Start, then select the profile that you have defined in #3 above.

7. Follow the prompts on the phone and car to pair the devices.

8. Once paired, the synch will start, and the contacts will be sent to the car kit. A 'Transferring data' message will be displayed. The transfer took only a couple of minutes for 300+ contacts in my phone.

Hope this helps any frustrated BMW car kit users out there.

Define synchronization settings for Contacts:

Include in sync: Yes
Remote database: Contacts
Synchronisation type: Normal

Server version: 1.1
Server ID: when you switch to 1.1, this option disappears
Data bearer: Bluetooth
Host address: PC Suite
User name: none
Password: ***
Allow sync requests: Yes
Accept all sync reqs: Yes

If the phone is running Windows Mobile...

This piece of software sorts it so it works properly...

Without it, most windows phones just sync a few of your contacts, and there isn't really a pattern to it. This software ensures that they all get transferred. You've got nothing to loose trying it, first 30days is free!!

(Information pinched from a post by SOS - the Bluetooth/BMW master from another forum  ). Hope this helps 8)

Hi,

Forgive me but i'm new to the forum so I hope i'm placing this in the right place! I've a 2006 130i M that i've owned since last april and it has the bluetooth kit option. I've a Nokia N95 which connects but as per above comments, I can't list a phone book on the radio. Am I right in now thinking that there is no other way but to manually imput all of my address book and that it won't bluetooth over? :?

Nokias are notoriously the worst for this. Try sending the contacts to the car using the phone... or 2 get a software upgrade for the phone and the Progman update for the car. Mine gets the latest progman update on the 25th March and I am due an N95 8Gb... I'll let you know how I get on

Hi guys,

I have an Apple iPhone which I use in my 5er daily without issue, it connects using bluetooth to iDrive and a snap-in adaptor in centre armrest keeps it charged and links to roof aerial.

Now the wife has a 130i with bluetooth I obviously want to use it in there too. The iPhone connects and I get the phonebook and can instigate a call, but as soon as it connects the bluetooth connection bombs and disconnects, displaying "searching for handsets" (or something similar).

Spoke to the suplying dealer and they said to check and update firmware would be 1.5hrs (£120+) and there is no guarantee it would work.

The car is a UK Dec 05, Professional single CD and bluetooth interface (with cradle under armrest)

Any advice? Can you check the firmware version of the bluetooth without a trip to dealers?

Cheers

Paul

Although it's an extension on the other E50... I replaced my Nokia E50 with a Nokia E51.

The phone works like a charm, in combination with the contact downloader... However, this phone works even better than the E50, as it also shows signal strength and missed calls and messages (but since I use MailForExchange I allways have messages waiting ;) )

Thought I let you guys know!

I've upgraded the firmware in my iPhone to v2.0... which is now very flakey, locking up and resetting regularly (aka Windowz Mobile!!!)

One thing I have noticed is that it now works more often than not in the 1 series, where as it wouldn't hold the call before. I still looses bluetooth connection frequently, but it's better.

Is anyone using a BlackBerry successfully with their ProNav/iDrive?

I'm using a Nokia 6300 without any problems but am keen to get a BlackBerry. Top list says the Pearl 8100 works fully. However, the BMW official list gives a number of different models, all with "Limited" capability.

The car is 11/05 build. Ideally I'd like the new Bold model launched in a few weeks, or a Curve 8310 both with QWERTY keyboard.

Would appreciate feedback if anyone has used one. :)

I mentioned before about upgrading the iPhone v2.0 and it being flakey, but I put it down to v2.0 in an old iPhone.

Just got the 3G version (with v2.0) and two problems. Firstly, it's a fraction biger, so my BMW iPhone snap-in cradle doesn't really fit the phone, it does, but it's a real squeeze and doesn't release properly. Secondly, the phone contacts do not transfer to iDrive in my 535d, where they would with the previous version.

I'll play around with a few ideas I have to fix the contact sync and let you know.

I've been shown a Blackberry Pearl as opposed to an iPhone 3G today by a customer and on the strength of what he has shown and told me I'm inclined to forget about contacts compatibility and get an iPhone - it's brilliant!

Hi Chanlon.

I can confirm that the Nokia E65 phone works perfect on my 2008 118d, however to transfer the contacts the Nokia Contact Download application is needed.

The configuration of Nokia sync profile isn't required.

Hi.....

I've got an N95 8GB, '3' branded phone with a software level of 2.0.016 and am having terrible problems trying to get the contacts sync'd with the bluetooth on my 120d. The car is the 2007 model with iDrive.

I have tried the steps that sos suggested but can't get the contacts across. When I try I send any of them as business card I get 'Unable to Connect'. I jave tried various different permutations, with a sync profile, the 'download contacts' app, switching on and off, etc. It is very frustrating and I would give up if I hadn't seen that other people have succeeded! The general consensus seems to be that its a Nokia issue as people have problems with the Audi as well. I haven't contacted them yet - but gather by the amount of views of the various forum posts that this is a comon problem. I shall email them if I don't manage to sort it.

Thanks, sos for your post. But can you just verify if you get the 'unable to connect' message when trying to send the contacts, but it works anyway - or are there no error messages at all?

I just bought a Nokia 6500c as a work phone, and it works perfectly in the pre-facelift 1er. now I have both my Nokias paired (I have a 6233 as well) and prioritized the two. Shame you cannot have two phones connected at the same time, like to a PC.

I have tried my iPhone (2G) with my bluetooth (non iDrive) and it doesn't really work. It connects and disconnects every few seconds and doesn't download the phone book. I am running v2.0.1 of the iPhone firmware. I have tried it with my wife's iPhone too which is running v1.1.4 firmware and while it does seem to be better (doesn't disconnect and reconnect all the time) it still isn't really any good since I can answer incoming calls but then not hear the call. It seems to crash the bluetooth in the car until the car is left with the ignition off for a while.

My car is a 56 plate, does anyone know if there is a BMW update for the bluetooth unit? I've only had the car for just under 2 weeks and was wondering if I may be able to get the dealer to sort something out.

Does anyone else have a iPhone working successfully with the BMW bluetooth unit?

Hi everyone,

I've been using my new iPhone 3G without any problems for as couple of weeks now. I have the prof head unit with prof sat nav but BMW recently updated my iDrive to the latest version as I had it lock up completely a few times.

There's neat feature in the sync where the type of phone number is listed in brackets after the contacts name. I also don't have the problem of the car/phone syncing email addresses which used to happen with my Motorola V6 Maxx.

No call drop outs or difficuty in connecting.

In my Mar '06 535d with iDrive, version 1.4 worked brilliantly, no bluetooth drop-outs ever, but in my wifes Nov '05 130i with ProCD, version 1.4 would connect and disconnect regularly. Now that I have version 2.0.1 it connects with the 535d iDrive, but no contacts get transfered... and the 130i is no better.

I'm swaping the 535d for an e92 M3 on Saturday, when I had a test drive I checked that v2.0 worked with iDrive and it did, transfering all contacts... so it is the BMW bluetooth that needs updating in the 535d and 130i... however BMW want £120 to do this in the 130 !
