Right guys, I'll try & keep this short and sweet;

Recently came across my rear brakes pulling up as though I'm applying the handbrake, when the car should be coasting;

Took a closer look and the smell gave it away that something wasn't right;

I drive a 59 plate e82 72,000 miles..

Having jacked the car up to give the back wheels a spin, the drivers side was stuck solid/passenger side very tight indeed, had to apply some pressure to move.

Would anyone know the part numbers for new calliper(s) - I take it I'll need new or can you refurb what you've got?

Will I need new disc & pads? Or am I right in saying change them anyway?

Does anyone know around about the price? I've been quoted at a specialist £613.80?

You might not need a new caliper and could just need a clean up and regrease etc, however if you do then i usually get mine from who are always pretty good price.

Editted to add, as for discs and pads depends on condition but if getting low or showing signs of uneven wear just do the lot then its all sorted :)

No problems glad to help.

Its fairly basic to remove and clean up caliper if you have the tools, just remove caliper and pads, clean up everything with wire brush and brake cleaner etc, check piston pushes back in nice and smooth and get someone to carefully press pedal to bring piston back out a little to make sure its ok, dont pop it right out!

Also check the 2 slider pins to make sure it all moves freely, if all good refit pads with small amount of copperslip or simialr antiseize compound on ends of pads where they slide on caliper bracket, also a thin smear on piston face and the part of caliper that hooks onto back of outer pad, refit it all and see how it goes, if it binds again its probably the piston and some corrosion inside so just get replacement caliper and swap it all over is easiest.

I had to do both on my old 130 as they pistons were sticking!, they felt ok when pushing back in but kept binding on and wheel got hot!... replaced caliper body and all was good :)

Just a little thing to add to what Ian has said.

If you clean the brake caliper with a wire brush that's fine, but keep it away from the surface of the piston and the rubber boot that goes over the piston.

Really a refurbished caliper with new seals that's correctly cleaned should be adequate as that's all a refurbished caliper is but I realise sometimes that's not practical.

And if you're lubing the slider pins, use a rubber friendly red brake grease or you could be looking at more problems down the line.

My NSF has been doing the same. I cleaned it off and freed the piston but its come back a week later.

Having trouble finding a replacement calliper online, most places are out of stock!
