I was wondering if anyone has any info on when there will be a facelift to the 2 series and what we can expect to change with the m240i. I read yesterday that the updates to the 4 series engines had been announced (440i).

Not sure when the 2 Series is coming but you can already spec a 440i on coast2coastcars.

The 440i is nice. But I feel I would prefer the m240i. Need to wait and see both :D
The 2 Series facelift is coming in March 2017.
The M240i will arrive in this year (as MY2017) while the facelift comes next year, according to this:

If you read the last page of this very speculative thread - Mx40i out in 2017 as 2018MY - patience and guess work in abundance unfortunately.......

Where exactly did you read that? I only found this:

The notes you quoted from the OP are for MY2017. Presumably there will be another press release for Summer which is when MY2017 starts in the US. Expect the M140i changes to be announced then.

With the F22/F23/F87 LCI now a lock for MY2018 in 2017 (albeit with exact dates not yet known),.........

So? Mx40i and LCI are two different things.
Correct. The Mx40i will be a B58 engine (slightly higher power than the current N55). The LCI is a facelift, new style front and rear bumper normally plus a few other small changes.

For example, the 335i and 340i look identical other than badge and a different engine.

Those refer to the American market. The LCI for the 2 Series is out in Europe in March 2017. The M140i will be launched with the B58 engine in September this year. I would be very surprised if the M240i isn't launched at the same time because otherwise the M140i will have more power than the 2 Series equivalent, which would be unacceptable.

So September 2016:

M140i and M240i receive new engine (B5:cool2:.

2 Series LCI in March 2017 (along with M2 LCI).
Interesting - by the logic above, a new model m240i (pre LCI) in Sept 2016 will then become obsolete 6 months later by virtue of m240i LCI in March 2017. Really ?

More speculating ? Only time will tell...
It's a new engine with a few more hp, not a new model. BMW make minor changes to their cars several times a year, this just happens to be slightly less minor :)

And I'm not sure I would call it 'obsolete' - I don't expect the LCI to bring huge changes. The exterior is already a successful design, and the interior was almost untouched on the F20 LCI.

Yes, but BMW do this all the time. The 325d was introduced a few months before the LCI in 2015.
For the 10bhp or so it'll get (m2 still needs s worth while gap or what's the point) and the fact the new engine will be less able to tune and more locked down (reports on the 340i which had the same engine) the best bet is to just buy a 135 without the badge. Not a soul will know the difference and the cars will be err a outs just as fast as each other regardless so why spend the premium when there are deals to be had on the 135?
Andrew,

Tunability of B58 x40i - agree if you talking about remaps but no so as far as piggybacks go.

BMS, with their JB4, have been seeing some superb gains on their beta maps 1 and 2, way exceeding equivalent of N55....
