So I placed an order for a 235i a couple of weeks ago but before all this when I was test driving and looking around I was always disappointed that the F22 didn't come with the option for a HUD.

But looking through the BMW accessories page I stumbled across a genuine BMW HUD (OLED screen) that attaches to your dash and has the same functionality as the factory built HUDs. What are your thoughts? Does anyone already have one fitted to their M-lite?

There is a good informational post on another forum about it

I personally think it looks a bit cheap and tacky, but if you like it then that's all that counts.

I do like the proper HUD in the 3 Series and above though. Nice bit of kit.

I had one on my last 120d, retrofitted it myself after ordering the kit from Germany.

My old car didn't have nav, and so the screen was genuinely useful for putting nav instructions in front of you, and I found the digital speedo and cruise info on the screen helpful as well.

I removed mine before I traded the car for my current one, and initially it did feel strange not having it sitting on top of the dash. I haven't refitted it, and probably won't as my new one has nav.

You do get a free fully featured Garmin nav app with the HUS too, which worked well and includes map updates etc for life as well.

I looked into this for the Active Tourer and stealers quoted me £650 fitted, needless to add no chance at that kind of money!

I looked into this, but it's very badly integrated with the car's systems.

For example, while it does show nav directions, they come from your phone, not from the navigation system on the iDrive - so you need to set your destination in both systems. It gets data like speed, bhp and torque from the Canbus in the car, but doesn't show you current engine rpm, which would actually be useful for judging shift points while keeping your eyes on the road; far more so than bhp or torque.

If this was properly integrated with iDrive and gave useful real-time engine information, I'd be tempted - the HUD was the only 3 series feature I really wanted that I couldn't have on the 1 - but it is just too much of a bodge for me. You may as well buy Garmin's own HUD, which is rather cheaper, and gives you everything this does except the bhp, torque and low fuel warning.

Yeah, it's functional rather than beautiful, but it does the job if you need it to do that particular job. Once it's fitted though, you don't notice it much, it's the only bit of the car people commented on to be honest!

For a car with sat nav already fitted, it does lose one of the main features, and I agree it would be good if it could tap into the factory system and display the arrows.

For a car with nav, you're looking at a digital dash top speedo, low fuel/washer fluid warning/cruise info and torque and power. The latter two are very small displays top left of the screen, and quite difficult to read on the go, so not sure what use they are. They also don't change on a mapped or chipped car.

I was going to sell mine, but I guess I'm talking folks out of it?!

It made more sense in my last non nav car to be honest, but I liked it in that one and was genuinely useful for nav, and the speedo display particularly at night was useful and it took me a while to stop looking on top of the dash binnacle in the new one.

I recently bought a used 235i with one of these. It does look a bit Halfords and reflects on the screen badly in almost any light conditions.

To get it fully functional I tried to download the app to my Moto G3 but it said it wasn't compatible. Any ideas?

I suspect I'll remove it. Is it just stuck on the dash? It looks like I could carefully prise it away and unplug it.

Thanks

Had mine fitted when I collected the M140i and up to now pretty pleased with it. Agree that its a bit poor you have to dowload the Garmin maps and BMW HUD App but I still find it very useful for speed restrictions, safety cameras and real time traffic info/hold ups, the nav works wekl. The flip up screen adjusts for brightness automatically and I've not had any relections on the windcsreen. Cost was 445 fitted which I felt was comparable with aftermarket HUDs which gave less data.

You got any pics from the outside looking in?

Is the wiring tidy.? Where does it connect to?

Hi, could someone answer this please about this product. Can the navigation maps be seen on the phone simultanious with the head up display giving driving instructions? Because it would be nice to be able to see the maps also.

I read that someone on the FB page got a head up display unfit from the F30 3 series and successfully implemented it on his F2x..

Unfortunately he did not give much details of how but did mention if I recall that you chad to cut the dash cowl up and do some coding to get it working..

One thing I would love in the 1/2 Series

Found this which has an image of some cowling to fit the display which looks much cleaner than it just plonked on top
