Hi.
I have a bmw 1 series 116 petrol 2008
Today I was driving my car and all of a sudden there is a bad ticking noise coming from the engine . The noise is constant but goes away when you put the clutch in.
I have had a yellow engine warning light coming up then going on the dash couple of times. The car doesn't go in to limp mood tho.
After opening the bonnet there is a big oil leek coming from what I think is the oil filter.

Any ideas on my problem? Thank you

Have you checked levels as it may be really low so make sure u have some oil to top her up. Has it been serviced recently that may of resulted in filter been loose.

Well if you've lost a lot of oil then the camshaft etc may have ran a little dry but that may not be the case. To be honest the engine in your in not the most familiar with. But think you will need to sort what ever is at fault sharp ish mate. Just keep a close eye on oil level.

I reckon your timing chain tensioner has let go.

Luckily they're not expensive, but I wouldn't move the car until you've fixed it.

I think the problem is solved now..
I took my car in today to someone I know that owns his own garage and has done all my cars.
From what he said the chain is all good.
The problem was servicing .
When I bought the car 18 months ago it came with fully serviced stamped book. (Apparently)
Today my bloke has pluged my car in to his thing and it has came up with the car was last serviced at 22k miles, and now it's at 84k miles.
i have had it fully services today and engine flushed through and now is running better than it ever has!!
He has told me he isn't sure if I have damage the engine tho.

Does anyone know where I stand about this issue? I would have never bought the car if I knew it haven't been serviced since 2010 , and the weekend I picked up my car the garage has stamped the book saying they have serviced it also which they haven't.

Thanks
