Guys,

I've found a BMW 130i LE. It's got 14k miles on the clock, 1 owner and a full service history.

Looking at it as potential investment opportunity... but how likely do you think they are to go up in value over the next 5 years?

And does anyone know anywhere to store such a thing... I've seen plenty of places but are a little pricey at £20 a week.

I actually think you'll see something in 5 years. Even now good examples are becoming harder and harder to find. PLus it's a 1 owner car with full service history. Wait 15 years though, and I think it'll be worth a fortune. 6 cylinder NA, 265hp, in a hatch? There aren't anymore of those cars ever going to be made, and the LE is such a nice all round car.

If it's not silly money, buy it - or send me the link and I'll buy it. If you don't put any miles on it, it's going to be worth whatever you paid for it all day as long as it's not silly money.

Crazy idea it's nothing more than a 1 series not desirable enough to go up in value
prove me wrong but I just can't see it

As has been said I don't think you'll profit on it but rather you should enjoy it as it was meant to be, when it comes to move it you should still get a decent return?

I think for investments I would be looking at M cars, just look at what E39 M5 values have been doing over the last few years :eek2: 5 years is a long time though, who knows when/whether the arse will fall out of the market?

Kinda annoying I wanted to buy an E36 M3 about 5 years ago when I was 17. Could buy a lovely one for 4 grand with everything, good examples were £3200. Now look at the values!

Same here. I wanted to buy a E36 M3 a few years back. A good one was about £5k now they've gone up :|

Considered an E36 M3 instead of the 130i, just about everything I heard and read suggested the 130 was the better car... when I bought my car I could have had a clean M3 for similar ish money, no idea what the values are like now though...

Similar story for a lot of the older M cars, they all command such a premium over non M siblings, and a reasonable premium over other marques too (AMG equivalents etc)
- E46 M3 can still be had reasonably but there's too many ropey ones out there now
- E39 M5 is a car I still lust after but there's basically no hope of getting a decent one for less than 10 grand now
- E34 M5 I don't think has been 'cheap' for years
- E60 and E90 are arguably good value atm (excluding the running costs :p)

So long story short, OP spend your 14k on this not the 130i " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and then please let me have a go in it

I would also love a e39 M5. I had a e39 540i and the engine was so great but it was an auto and it ruined the whole experience for me. I have wanted a e39 M5 since I first started looking at e39's in general. I also think the e39 is still a truly great looking car!

Have to agree with all of the above comments. The 130i is a great car and I doubt you'll lose much money on any well looked after example, the value may even creep up, however, if you want to 'invest' it would have to be in a very very good condition M car. Garage it, service it and pamper it and I'm sure you'd make a decent return in 5 to 10 years. Although I doubt you'd make as much return as taking the same £15 to £20k to a good stock broker and getting him to invest it in a balanced portfolio of shares for the same period of time :).

That was my thinking exactly. I've put a deposit down on it, going to view it Monday.

I think if I had somewhere to store it for free, it would be a no brainer. Just questioning the storage costs at the moment.

Plus I love driving, so doubt I would be able to keep my mits off it for 5 years with out racking up some miles..!

That E34.... wow! What a car!

I can definitely see your point, I've just got a feeling the LE is going to be something really special in couple of years. There are less of them on the road than the 1M.

Perversely there's potentially even less of mine as a non LE 3 door - so if rarity is significantly affecting the value perhaps I am sorted :p

My take on it is at the end of the day LE is just a trim level not a bespoke performance car like the ///Ms

I'm definitely in 2 minds. The E34 M5 looks like a good investment though... does mileage effect classic cars that much?

Depending on what you pay, I think it has the potential for a small gain over a 5 year period, but it's not going to be a licence to print money.

I'm not sure if wrapping it in cotton wool and putting it in a box is the way to go. Better buy it, keep it in a garage, use it at weekends and perhaps only in decent weather as a second car and put a few thousand miles a year on it. It will then prove a very cheap, fun, motoring proposition and you will see most of your money back when you come to sell.
