I bought a OBD to USB cable a year or so ago from Cableshack along with a free version of NCS Expert and never had any joy with it. I had issues with Windows compatibility so the software never worked properly despite several versions sent to me.

I am now looking for a cheapish solution to fault code diagnose, clear fault codes as needed and the odd bit of coding if I need to replace parts. From hearing what members on here have done with the Carly app it seems like a really good, easy to use product. Are there any other tools people are using and would recommend? I have seem the X tool but that does not appear to be able to code? I assume it would be the Gen 2 bluetooth adapter that I would need to be able to code my 2007 E81 with the Carly App? Any thoughts and experiences would be appreciated. Thanks

Carly app hands down. Fantastic bit of kit. Makes everything super easy. No questions asked in my mind.

Another shout for Carly. It has some limitations to what it can do but its updated on a regular basis. It is capable of doing more than most of us actually buy it for so good for basic coding.

Hey Jon, Agree with Dom (edit - and now Graeme also) it's an amazing device, however it does have its limitations.

It can't code in Bluetooth or cruise control or a different radio etc, and somethings just won't code -
For example - I would say out of 10 people I've had a 50% success rate of getting their wing mirrors to fold in when locked with the fob - can't explain this other than this can be coded 100% with the D can cable and NCS expert. Also the alarm chirp isn't guaranteed either. Just my observations, although MOIC lol

Nice to hear good things about Carly, I ordered their OBD adaptor thingy last night through Amazon should arrive today. I'll be due a new battery soon (still on original) so it should pay for itself registering that.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Pity the Carly App can not code the HU's and other bits and pieces. Realistically I won't need this but it's always nice to have. I think for the money and the ease of use the Carly App seems like a no brainer. Can you confirm it is the Gen 2 adapter that I should be getting?

If you do get this done please do a write up. I'd like to have cruise control but no idea how to go about it

Cheers
There's a whole set of comprehensive instructions in the how to section of the forum mate.

Tells you everything you need to know. Fitting and coding. Very useful.

Maybe I should give NCS another go. The problem I had was I was told because of the age of my car (57 plate) the version of NCS was designed to run on Windows XP, not Windows 7 which I was running on my old laptop. I now have a Macbook Pro with Windows Parallels as my old laptop died last year, will I be able to set up NCS on the Mac? Do you have any links to somewhere I could download a version of NCS that would work? Cheers

I run NCS on a Macbook Pro in Bootcamp on windows 10 just fine.

Drop me a PM for help.
Cool, thanks. My girlfriend also has a laptop running Windows 7 so I can try it on that again as a backup. I can't exactly remember what the issue was, the cable and software was recognising my car but I think that was about it. I will have a play tomorrow and maybe take some screen shots and PM you. Thanks again.
