Not sure if their on here but doesn't look good for that M140i. :(

Could be the head gasket has gone, a damaged/cracked cylinder head and/or block or possibly something else serious. Definitely looks like it's burning coolant though hence the white plumes of smoke.

^^ this.

I initially thought condensation in the exhaust - but as soon as those huge plumes came out when he gave it a bit of gas, that definitely looked like eating coolant.

The owner has since responded as well as another person trying to be helpful.

The owner says it's not losing or using coolant so the other guy has suggested it could be a blown oil seal or even blown turbo.

Although if it was the latter I'd have thought he'd definitely get a "yellow triangle: do not drive" alert on the dash. :?

I still think your original thoughts makes more sense.

Burning coolant equals white smoke.
Burning oil equals blue smoke.

Does the owner mention whether the smoke smells sweet (coolant) or smells oily?

Remember the B58 runs two different coolant systems. One for the charge air heat exchanger and the other to cool the engine/turbo. Can we assume he's checked the levels for both systems?

Edit: sorry I just re-visited the YouTube video and noticed the responses.

Yep me too tbh.
When I had oil problems before on an old car I owned years ago the smoke was much more grey/blue whereas his is clearly white smoke.

I didn't know the B58 had two different cooling systems and nor did the owner so it is possible he's losing coolant from the other bottle without even realising it.

Cold night and engine and exhaust moisture burning off to me...
You must be joking! :lol2: :eek2:

Apart from watching the full video which I hope you did have you read the video description?
This is definitely not just condensation related, come on.
My E46 was as bad as that in winter....

But yeah never read the description to be honest.. The way it is dissipating it is deffo steam/moisture not smoke, would not rule out moisture in the fuel or tank/iffy fuel......

If that was smoke it would drift across the car park but it dissipating in and around the car in close proximity...

Yep I thought this too. I had already mentioned moisture in the fuel/bad fuel to the owner in the video comments.

We had 30000 litres of diesel at work from a refinery once full of water everything we filled shut down and would not restart..

Hhhmm I've never seen a car give off that much condensation ever but I hope you're right for the owners sake.
I still think it's something worse going on but I might be wrong.

Big 6 E46's were notorious for it.. Twas a regular bricking themselves kind of posts during winter on another forum i moderate on...

If he ain't losing coolant at all you have to rule in or out the obvious but if its under warranty though it ain't worth worrying about either.....

TBH my first thought was just steam on a cold night as well, doesn't look too alarming, however it does have the drivetrain fault at the same time.

Either way, it's a lease car and should still be covered by BMW so not sure why he's using it on not just phoning BMW Assist who will come and pick it up and give him a courtesy car from my experience.

Hi guys. I'm bringing up an old thread here but my car is in the garage for the same thing. It's a 2017 and my issues started in September 2018 - misfiring, surging under load and white smoke.

The car has had fuel injectors, spark plugs and coil packs replaced. It sure which ones but I know they all didn't get changed. Now the car is sitting in garage after having cylinder head replaced. The dealer ship is in contact with BMW as the car is still smoking on start up.
