Hi All,

I have a BMW 116D M Sport f20 2012 and need to replace the front speakers as mine are goosed...

I have been helped previously on here with being told the speakers are 4 inch / 10cm fronts as I don't have the upgraded audio system I don't have separate tweeters just CO-AX.

I rang a company and they told me I couldn't use the aftermarket speakers I enquired about ( JBL GTO 429 or FOCAL AC100 ) as they wouldn't fit and I needed custom made speakers.

They told me the only speakers I could use were RAINBOW IL - X4 F Series front speakers which they quoted £139.. far more expensive than my previous choice.

My question is, is this the case?

Will they fit or won't they, or was I just being fobbed off in order to buy a more expensive option, I was told they wouldn't fit due to depth and sizing issue etc with the door card.

Thanks in advance.

Speak to a reputable person from here :). Any shallow 4" speaker should be fine, although if they're not a drop in solution mounting points may not be in the right place and a small adapter may need to be made. Focal, Gladen, MB Quart do drop in solutions.

The Focals do have pretty big magnets compared to other 4" speakers.

Cheers Sonic,

Excuse my noobishness, however what do you mean by drop in solution mounting points, if you could explain this in simple terms for me haha

Sonic,

Spoke to Mike at K and M in Wigan which is very close to where I live and I'm going to pop in next week, they have demo units set up with speakers to hear and test so happy days!

Cheers again.

Drop in solutions are just that, remove the old speaker and the new one goes straight in without any problems :). No need for brackets/adapters/etc. Just unbolt the old ones, bolt the new ones in, wire them up and you're off :).

Glad I could help.

Cheers Sonic,

My dad can fit the speakers for me but I just need to get the right ones,

Rainbow IL-X4 co ax speakers are the main ones that I can get for a reasonable price,

I was quoted £250 by k and m for them to fit some audison front speakers, just not worth paying that much IMO.

I don't know of any other speakers that would drop in tbh..

Regards,

Any shallow 4" should go in but change to components at a minimum, you'll compromise on quality and move the sound stage if you put co-ax's in. Do you have factory tweeters or not?

I don't have tweeters in full stop, I have the M sport with standard speakers no tweeters, so co-ax is a quick fix for me.

I just need sound! I have no sound at all from the fronts with them blown so decent aftermarket co-ax would be a huge step up anyway.

In that case, as you said, co-ax's are a quick fix but I'd personally I'd go down the route of components and do it properly. You can drill into the tweeter covers and put the tweeter in there as well.

I've had the Rainbows installed for nearly a year now - as a drop in replacement they're not too bad and definitely a step up from the factory units.

I believe they have correctly sized drop ins for the rears now as well (IL-X4 BMW Mix Front / Rear, Part No.: 231245).....
Cheers Streamer, Yeah for 78 quid drop in replacement I may aswell haha thanks for your help regards,
