Hi All,

Firstly I must apologise for my primitive knowledge & language about motor vehicles. I am not a car enthusiast but I do like my BMWs my current being the 6th consecutive one I have owned. So please bare with me while I explain a problem with my 2011 BMW 1 series Coupe that I am seeking help on.

Whilst driving along pretty much all the warning lights come on the dashboard, accompanied by fluctuating rev, speed and fuel dials. The car still drives fine, no loss of engine power or headlights but the indicators won't work, the radio goes on and off and the climate control fails. This re-occurs numerous times until eventually the dash goes completely and the rev & speed dial show zero. On every occasion this has happened when I stop and then restart the vehicle it rectifies the issue. The garage alert light also comes on display (car on ramp).

I have had my car into BMW specialist garages and shown them a video I have taken of it happening in the hope that they may have delt with this type of fault in the past and they all seem baffled. They have plugged their diagnostic computers into the car to check for faults and a long list of faults show up, the most concerning of which is failure of the rear brake lights - which has now forced me to leave my car on the drive.
One garage offered the advice of changing the alternator saying that they think the alternator is overcharging that battery causing the car to drop some of the systems in order to prevent damage. he was quite sceptical about that being the root cause though to I have withheld from getting the work done as this to me seems like a "well we can try this for you and see if it works" kind of plan. Has anyone else had similar issue? Feels like one of those issues that could end up in lots of expense trying different replacement parts to resolve.....

One thing I must add is that my rear parking sensors are not working and I had read another thread on this forum (below) about the PDC unit getting water in it which I am going to take a look at this evening to maybe see if this solves the problem

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have never used this forum before but I thought I may seek the advice of other who may be aware of this type of fault before allowing someone to take a mechanical stab in the dark costing me money !

Anyone help ??

Mark

A wet PDC is known to cause all sorts of electrical issues and strange lights on dashboard etc, so thats definitely something worth checking.

Had the same briefly in mine and it was a soaked PDC module causing it. Get it looked at asap and you might even be lucky enough to save the PDC before it's beyond repair.
