Hi guys, been browsing the forum for a couple of weeks now since iv owned my 2007 118d bit for some reason iv had trouble receiving the activation email. None the less im on here now :)

When i purchased the car i did so on the understanding the dmf would need replacing as it had quite a nasty vibration on idle and could be felt through the gearstick and when driving. Cut a long story short a friend replaced the dmf and brand new clutch kit for me yesterday.

Car drives beautifully now and no vibration atall and all gears engage smoothly. But...

On starting the car up when i picked it up i instantly realised something was odd. I could hear alot of noise coming through the leather gear gaiter. Noise that wasnt there before. And when drivong its the same, ots like engine noise/road noise combined. I asked my friend and he said everything is back the way it was and nothing was left off of missed out. As originally i thought maybe he had left off some sort of cover or rubber boot.

So my question is have any of you had this type of issue before or heard of anything like it? If so what is it

Thanks in advance :) Jamie

I think I'd be double checking the gearbox mounts, it could be ones failed / missing / crushed / over-torqued?

I dont actually think its road noise. More like engine noise.

I didnt know if it was exhaust noise maybe the exhaust hasnt been fitted back properly or is blowing. Hard to tell on my own or id hold a rag over the end and try and see if any smoke or noise is coming from elsewhere.

Really not sure what else it could be?

I still think I'd be double checking if one of the gearbox mounts has failed / missing / crushed / over-torqued. Your gearbox is obviously bolted directly to your engine, bolt that to your chassis and you'll get engine noises vibrating up through. Especially as it's just been removed and refitted.

Theres a rubber boot seal under the gearstick that has probably become dislodged when he has removed the gearbox

Lift up the gearshift gaiter and look at the stick below i bet you can see the the gearbox?

Now that's what i think it sounds like (if that makes sense) i will have a look tomorrow. I dont suppose you know how to remove the leather gaiter? Is it just a case of pulling from around the edges or will i have to remove all the centre console?

Thanks :)

Just push in towards the stick gently, then pull it up. I like to start with the long curved edge.
