130i Valve cover and while-you’re-in-there jobs

Had 29E0 and 29E1 codes come up recently for running rich/lean. Got a smoke test done this morning to check for leaks and it indeed seems as though the valve cover has a small crack in with only a very small amount of smoke escaping.

Obviously want to get this sorted asap as I don’t want it running lean for fear of eventually melting valves/pistons due to the extended burn time.

Car is on 115k and as far as I can remember hasn’t had anything much done engine wise besides OFHG with associated bits and water pump and thermostat (have only had it a couple of months).

My question is what else shall I do while replacing the valve cover? Obviously the valve cover gasket too, and I remember reading before about the eccentric shaft sensor and pcv valve in that area? (I may be wrong!) Are they worth doing? Obviously don’t want to spend money where not necessary but would rather spend a bit more while I’m there now than need to tear the cover off again in the near future.

If anyone has any input regarding what else to do and brands/part numbers it would be much appreciated. I only really want to go for OEM manufacturers or equivalent, not looking to skimp out now and pay twice later.

If I’m not mistaken Mahle is the manufacturer of the OEM covers? From my research thus far I found what seems to be the right valve cover on autodoc. I’m thinking I’ll likely just buy gaskets direct from BMW to save any hassle (seeing as they’re not the expensive part here!) unless anyone has any thoughts on the matter.

May attempt to DIY or may get my local Indy to do it, unsure yet… for those who have done it how was it? I’m competent on the tools but by no means a master mechanic.

I did mine. It’s not too bad but is time consuming and torque specs are critical because of the ali/mag block. I would expect the PCV hoses will be cracked so those are worth adding to your order - mine turned to dust when disconnected. The PCV itself is built into the cover on the N52K, so you’re good there.

Get the ESS and valvetronic motor gaskets ordered as you’ll be removing both anyway, so they’re unlikely to go back on without leaks. I changed the eccentric shaft sensor itself too, I was around the same mileage as you so thought it was probably worth doing preventatively.

You’ll have very good access to the DISA valves and starter motor so a good opportunity to check and replace if needed. Reman starters aren’t too pricy, mine died absolutely out of nowhere so if your car doesn’t start on the button that’s probably worth factoring in.

I fully agree with this.

I also want to just reiterate that the PCV hoses REALLY should be replaced as you're doing this. For me that was probably the worse part of the job alongside removing the intake itself.

The only reason I didn't do a starter on the E91 N52K was it had been done in the last year by previous owner.

Did mine last year and the 3 bolts at the front on the cam cover snapped off - they rust on the thread ends that are exposed behind the rad. Just a warning - I had to fit nut serts and alternative bolts (originals ae an odd size M7).

Might be worth doing the oil/water exchanger gaskets / orings as well whilst its accessible, and replace the mickey mouse flange will ally one.

Good time to do the plugs as well

Good to know. I’ll go BMW for the gaskets I think and then probably Mahle/Elring/Febi for the cover as they seem to have decent feedback, then VDO for the sensor as I believe they are the OEM.

I have the black top plastic cover, hence I don’t think I need a full PCV kit like the one you linked, the only related part seems to be that one hose I found otherwise it’s all replaced with the new cover (do correct me if I’m wrong though).

All good then!! Defo just the one longer hose/pipe and it's WAY easier than the silver top.
(If I didn't say, I've got one of each :ROFLMAO: )

Honestly you might get the pipe swapped without intake removal.... If you've got long enough arms!
