(I know this topic has been covered alot and I have done alot of browsing but with alot of information about its hard to find the what I'm looking for)

So my car has a slight whoosh past 1500rpm-ish only when upto running temperature, silent when cold. it's my understanding that this is the guides for the chain. Now I'm wondering if this is terminal and will require work soon. car was brought like this, I did my research and found out after 2009 (mines a 59) there isn't an issue with snapping, only noise. But now I'm getting worried. Is this something that needs to be sorted ASAP or can it be left for while. I was also thinking about a remap but I just want to be on the safe side before continuing.

Sorry for posting about something that has been done to death but I can't find any information relating to my circumstances.

Edit: no tapping, ticking, metallic sounds or rattling. Just a whoosh that I can't describe in text.

On the mitsubishi evo ten the chains don't stretch with 300bhp standard map but they do with 330bhp or 360bhp?

So surely a remap and increased power must put more strain on the chain setup?

I don't understand how the engine making more torque makes it any harder for the camshafts to spin? Every day is a school day though, can you explain that in detail for me please Rob?

I'm no engineer so don't expect a technical answer, I can only comment on the cars I work on
And it's only the higher power engines that need the uprated chains so it must have an affect

As your the engineer I think it's your job to answer it lol

The higher powered cars could have more aggressive cams & stiffer valve springs, to allow more power higher RPM's.

I don't see what that has to do with remapping an engine though?? :?

Regards the Evo X camchain ive seen chains stretch on all models not just the higher power ones, crazy isnt it that these so called zero maintenance camchains over the regular service old school cambelts are giving all these problems, give me a good old cambelt anyday :D

Ah, so Mitsubishi are just a bit poop. :lol2:
Haha well all camchains are poop.....if they go wrong :D i was looking at buying a 944 3litre a few years ago for a track car but they have camchains (turbo is a belt but 3.0 n/a is chain) and they had issues as well which when it goes destroys the gears cast onto cams that chain drives! so needs cams and all sorts of bits if they go meaning car is pretty much scrap!...decided against one in the end! :lol2:

My missus had an old micra which stretched it's chain, effectively writing her car off. It's a shame no one can get it right. I'd like to add the whoosh is only off throttle and very gentle throttle at slow speeds.

Really keen for more power but I don't want anything to catastrophically fail.

The only explanation that I can think of is one of two things:

Either the remap is increasing the rev limit slightly.

Or, more boost = probably running more retarded = higher cylinder pressure at the point the valve is opening, therefore harder to open the valve?

Not seen the old school cable tie technique on replacing cam chains? I'd have probably given that a go before writing the car off!

It wasn't really worth much and she was quoted £1000 by a garage to fix it. I can do basic car maintenance but I wouldn't want to attempt anything like that!
