Morning All !

Just wondering what oil people recommend for the 123d, according to the car the service isn't due yet, but I've done 8k and if possible looking to scrap the whole longlife oil schedule, I don't fancy doing 20k on the same oil.

I've always used Castrol Edge in my previous petrol cars and never oil changed outside the yearly service on the VAG diesels I've had, but never had a BMW diesel before.

Thanks in advance

Pretty sure a 2010 doesn't need the 10W-60, so any BMW LL04-approved oil is suitable. It doesn't have to be 0W-30, although that's a good choice (for example Castrol EDGE 0W-30... others are available).

Early cars need 10w60, something to do with the higher rev limit of the 123d, and relying on splash lube in the cylinder head. BMW redesigned the bearings in mid 2008.

Later cars are fine with LL04, and Castrol Edge is a great choice imo. :)

Thank you very much gents, Castrol Edge it is. I plan to change the oil, air filter and oil filter this coming weekend.

Although upon initial inspection the airbox looks like fort knox to get in to no doubt the BMW dealers know how though !

How the hell did they work that out??

You obviously didn't tell them, magnetic sump plug installed?

I fitted a mag plug at my intermediate service, my techie thought it was a good idea though, he didn't grass me up!

Good question, i was going to ask this soon regarding my 123d too!

My car is registered October 2008. So 0w30 is all good to go with?

It's got zero to do with registration date, it's all to do with build date. Your car might have been built in 2007 and sat in a field/showroom for a while.

Pop the last 7 digits of your vin into Realoem, or post up a photo of your engine cover.

I'd like to avoid using budget oils in a car of this nature, it's one thing along with tyres that I've no problem spending a few quid on.

There isn't a great deal between all auto grade oils in fairness but the big boys do have greater benefits.

BMW are no longer using the Castrol 0w30, they are now using Shell
The shell helix oils are very good, most dealers have dropped Castrol for their fuels. I know certainly a number of VAG marques anyhow.
