123d for 420d or 435d???

Guys /Gals,

I have a 123d (2012) chipped to 250bhp and I love it - it's a little pocket rocket. I own it and have had it for two years. I am getting itchy - I appreciate that could be solved with some cream.... My 123d is now nearly 4 years old and I am become wary of costs for replacement parts etc. It has been lovingly looked after but all things age.

I am considering either a 420d or 435d. Will it still feel like a pocket rocket? Am also thinking of moving from ownership to lease. I have researched the latter and if I am honest I am tempted. I tend to change car when the loan has finished so effectively I continually pay for it. Any thoughts / advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

A 420d will feel slow compared to a remapped 123d. I'd go for the 435d - however, it won't be as "throwable" as a 1-series due to the larger size and weight.
My mate has a 435d, it's a rocket! However whenever he's in my mlite all he goes on about is how quick mine is.

The 435 is almost too stable so you don't get that same feeling of speed

Bugger. That's the thing I love about the 123d. It feels like a go-kart..................

My missus said to get a sensible car and get a Caterham or similar. I don't fancy two (the garage is used as a shed) and we don't have kids. The 123d seems the balance between the speed, comfort, quality, handling and economy I love. An answer is to keep it but......... SHINY.............

If you can't feel it..............
If you've got to go diesel, a remapped 435d is a quick machine.
Everything I've read criticises the xdrive 3 series ashaving poor handling, so why not try a 430d instead?

Does your mileage justify a diesel? Why not try a 340i instead? Cheaper to buy. Or keep the feel of your current car and get a m135i?

Sir Marco,

I do 12 - 14k a year. Diesel, I love being tight. What's the view on remapping what is effectively a leased car?
What about a 225d?
I wouldn't nuke the warranty on a rental personally, not worth the potential hassle.

I do 18k per year, and I bet I'm tighter than you! :lol2:

225d is a good shout.
When did MP get knighted? :lol2:

But 225d does sound like a fair compromise. If they dropped the 6pot diesel into the 2er, it'd be the perfect motorway cruiser IMO

It's about time he did :p
Thanks guys. I have narrowed it down to a choice of 3:

435d xDrive M Sport. Fast. Go-kart feel? Fuel economy isn't great (see fast). Handling?
430d M Sport. A compromize between the two but will it feel that
225d M Sport. Gives me the go-kart feel. Not sure it is an improvement over what I've got (possibly not as quick either)

I suppose test drives are the order of the day. I had better start with the 225d as if I feel how fast the others are I won't bother.
There's no 235d.
The 123d is going :-(

A 430d arrives in its place on Tuesday :)

A 65 plate pre-reg with 99 miles on the clock. What surprises me is that it is the same BHP as my (chipped) 123D but Jez its soo much quicker!

That looks fantastic, well done :) as for performance - first of all, BHP isn't everything, torque matters more in real-world performance. The 430d is torquier. Secondly, thanks to its single-turbo setup, it will feel "quicker" due to the turbo spooling in one large chunk rather than the linear delivery of the twin-turbo setup. Thirdly, there's a whole world of difference between a chipped and a remapped 123d, and it's a shame you couldn't experience the vast change in performance of a remapped 123d. However, you could remap the 430d and then yes you'd have a car which can crush a remapped 123d :D

Thanks mate - the 123d was remapped by P-Torque - apologies for the confusion. Tempted with remapping the 430d but it seemed to have enough power. For now :) I think that the standard 430d crushes my remapped 123d

So first things first - an alarm upgrade by Antony at securemycar. I need to find out if my 123d winter tyres and wheels fit the 430d (B36.11.2.148.307) which has 19" double spoke 442M wheels. BMW seemed not to know.

I suspect the 430d has bigger brakes and therefore 17" winter wheels won't fit it
