2004 - 2006 118d are known to be diff eaters, especially if you don't change the diff oil occasionally.

People end up with a loud mechanical whine which alters with road speed, before failure.

Oh no! :( A diff oil change is so quick and easy, takes about 10 minutes lying behind the car, £15.

- for anyone else following this.

I'd consider having yours professionally refurbished, unless you're familiar with gearboxes (and understand end-float / shimming / etc) ?
