M235i Vs M240i and Manual or Auto

Post by Chance1988 » Fri Jun 22, 2018 4:32 pm

Been looking at M235i’s and M240i’s, would you say there is enough of a difference to stretch for the 40i, also I’ve been hard set on a Manual but I’ve heard a lot of people saying the auto is good. Just want people’s opinions tbh, I’ve got around £20k to spend with less than 25,000 miles on the clock. Just missed out on a M240i White manual today with <15000 on the clock up for £23,000, with negotiation could of been affordable.

Thanks for your time.

235 vs 240: depends on specific year of 235. Later ones have face lift and more importantly newer nav unit. I like my 2016 *35i and have No longing for the *40i version

Manual vs auto: dead horse debate. Simply put you should drive them and decide for yourself. Personally I am a die-hard manual person but for these cars, the auto box is better and i feel it's so appropriately matched to the vehicle that I've *never* felt like I miss a clutch pedal.

It would be a 15> m235i, thanks for the info. When did the facelift, newer Nav come in ? Ok, think I’m going to have to take both (MT/AT) out and see. Image

Whether it’s a 235 or 240 it needs to be auto as the auto will be better for resale, take a look at AT and the vast majority are autos.
As for 235 or 240 personally I would always buy the newer model as it will be better sorted, more up to date etc.

I would rather a car that I was happy with knowing it was my choice first, rather than thinking about resale. But I also know you’ve made a good point there.
I know the 235i engine seems like it’s been proven where as the 240i is still quite early to call. If money wasn’t an issue then I’d be all over a 240i manual but my budget is literally on the boundary 235i/240i

There was nothing in the late Model 235s that needed sorting. In fact some things were more proven, such as N55 motor, radiator resistance to stone damage, etc

I went with 135 LCI and I would never go to 140. x35 with MPE sounds soo much better then x40. The characteristics of the engine are also so different. x40's just pull low and especially with an auto box I just don't like it. I also picked a manual and I don't regret it.

I'm running-in my retro-fitted Limited Slip Differential (LSD) at the moment. I waited 2 years after buying my M235i before biting the bullet, and so far, I can see why people recommend it, even 'though I haven't really pushed it yet. Overall, I'd say the car is more predictable on cornering and launching, even on public roads. I can see why people say the M-Lites should come with the LSD as standard.

So another dimension might be that an M235i with retro-fit LSD might be preferable to a new M240i without, if that's how the financing works out. And sorry, you probably wanted a clear argument for M235i vs M240i, not a complication!

Thanks for all the replies, I’ve put a deposit down on a blue 16 M235i Manual, I got a good deal on it which is what made me go this way ! So now I can’t wait to pick it up in a weeks time. I’ve got no doubt I won’t be disappointed and looking forward to putting some little mods on it to make it feel more like mine.

Cheers guys !

Thanks Paul, is that because you are selling one by chance ? I shall have a look into those for sure.

N55 has a lot more character than modular B58 particularly with MPE but B58 pulls a little harder - N55 has better tuning options due to B58 ecu being a bit mod unfriendly
