Need some advice - accident damaged vehicle? E88

Post by Josh1991 » Thu Jul 18, 2019 9:48 pm

Hello

I bought a Used Approved 2012 E88 (118i) in May of this year from a BMW main dealer. The oil light came on and i thought simply enough that I needed to top the oil up, which i did & problem solved! Upon doing so (aswell as the bonnet release snapping and breaking as i opened the bonnet), i noticed in the engine bay, behind the fan there are two black struts making almost a 'v'shape and they are seriously mishapen and bent. I did not see this when i bought the car because of the angle you can see these from, i just didnt think to look and BMW assure you that its not been in any accidents etc. My dad reckons the cars been in a front end collision but the HPI check did not show that it had been accident damaged, repaired, written off etc. Obviously this could have happened and just not have been recorded and done privately.

I am concerned that the black bars are seriously mishapen and bent and the one on the drivers side is very near the fan. so, firstly what are these struts/bars please (sorry im not very mechanically minded) secondly - is this normal/does it look normal for these bars to be mishapen and bent like this? I wouldn't have thought BMW would have done this on purpose - looks very un BMW like to me!

I would really appreciate if any of you could shed some light on this. Hopefully you can see the pics ive attempted to attach. I am concerned that this is not right and if it is not i will go back to the dealer as surely this is something that the 'approved used' process should have noted.

Thank you and apologies for my lack of technical detail!

Josh

Well that’s a good start.

There’ll be someone along (with better knowledge) to say if those bars look normal or not. Image

Can you get the part number for the bars from www.realoem.com.
Google the part number and see if you can find some images.
Just an idea. Might work.

I've got an E82 coupe and just went out to have a look at what mine looks like...

I don't see those bars on mine. This might be because i don't have the petrol engine.

Looking at those pics again - had they been bent ridiculously out of shape by a prang you might expect to see paint cracking around the stressed area, is this the case?

Lol, your Dad is pulling your plonker Mate.

This is what the diagonal torsion bars look like brand new:

Image

The E88 is full of extra bars to compensate for the floppiness BMW introduced when they chopped the roof of the monocoque.
