Hi all,
I'd appreciate any help or advice that can be given. I recently bought a used 1 Series 2014 116i Sport (46500 miles).
It drove perfectly for the first day, but then I kept getting a 'cruise control failure' error coming up on the screen. I called the dealer and he said it's probably just because the battery is a bit too low, he said drive it for a few days and see if it stops.
Next two days I drove the car and it drove perfectly- all road types and speeds incl. motorway. However the cruise control failure kept coming up.
Then after 3 days of driving fine (albeit with the cruise control error), I pulled out of car park in 1st gear having just started the engine, and the power just dropped off completely- had my foot full down and the car was just crawling and engine almost stalling. Then error message came up saying 'Drivetrain. Continue journey at moderate speed, full performance not available'. I pulled over and re started the engine a couple of times, revved it a bit and drove off. It was then perfectly fine for the 20 min drive home, so i just put it down to a cold engine or something as it was freezing could outside.
Then next day I popped out to shop in the car (cruise control failure error came up as usual when engine started) , and as I drove away from home, the acceleration seemed very jerky- put put foot down and nothing would happen, then power would kick in then drop off again etc. As I left shop, same thing happened, but then after about 1 min, the car slowed to a crawl and the same 'drivetrain' error came up. I had to crawl at 3 mph through lights and over a roundabout with hazards on and pull over. Re-started engine a couple of times, and it worked much better, managed to get it home, although acceleration still felt a bit jerky.
I took it to the dealer to have a look at, and he's told me his mechanic was pretty sure it's the 'squib assembly' that has a fault- the part around the steering wheel that has the indicator stalk etc. He says he needs to order it in which will take about a week.
I'm by no means a car expert, and I've asked a couple of people who tinker with cars if this diagnosis sounds right, and they think it seems a bit strange. And it certainly doesn't make sense to me.
Can anyone please advise if this diagnosis sounds plausible? And if so, how the indicator stalk assembly could cause power loss to the engine?
Many thanks in advance
