E82 120d - Sudden Loss of power! Need help!

Post by tocUK » Tue May 08, 2018 7:17 am

I was driving back home last night in major traffic jam and so the engine must have got pretty hot, after a few hours of crawling in traffic we got away on the motor way for well over an hour then shortly after we left the motorway I noticed the car lost most of its power, I had to go all the way down to second gear just to get up a hill took ages to build up speed had to do it very gradually it shows no lights on dash... I limped along like this for 40 mins to get home. Just as I got home it burst in to life for 30 secs then back to power loss again, not tried it this morning yet its sat on the drive, any ideas? :(

Poorly turbo? Any siren noises coming from the exhaust?

Its back, just coming back home its hot and sunny outside. The car has lost like +30% of its power again on acceleration I cant hear the turbo either, soon as I floor it takes a while to gain speed it will reach ok speeds but the acceleration is lacking.... ?? :?

Is there any way I can tell if the turbo is working I have software or under the bonnet.. any suggestions on what to look at ?

It will suddenly feel like it's lost 30% of it's boost for no good reason.

Does it get lots of long motorway runs with a full tank of diseasil?

Not lots, the last time it did it was when I came off the motor way i'd been flying down for 2 hours! (again hot day)

And again as it did last time it works fine this morning when cold!!! So its something that's getting warm. Both times when its been a really hot day.

Would a DPF suddenly unblock every time it cools?

UPDATE: Same again car was stood all night although its a warm day it worked fine for first 20mins then suddenly lost power again, finally came back and read off the fault codes.

40E9 - Abgasrückführsteller, Positionsregelung = Exhaust gas recirculation control, position control
4C9E - Abgasrückführventil, Plausibilität. = exhaust gas recirculation valve, plausibility

Whats the first step / most likely buy a new EGR Valve ?

Looking under the bonnet I found a pipe which connected from the vac of the solenoid valve (7805391) and T's off one way a short distance to an electronic valve mounted on the erg cooler the other way disappears towards the back of the engine and cant see where it goes too... anyway this pipe has a split in it, it looks as though the acoustic engine cover has rubbed a split in it!! also the pipe has a rubber exterior all the others are fabric and the ones in the Haynes manual if it where fabric then I don't think it would have the split... The whole fuel system was cleaned out last year plus high pressure pump ext replaced I'm wondering if they replaced this then and as its he wrong material its rubber though...

Could this split in the Vac pipe be my issue ?

Item number 13 is the green pipe on the link below

Hi Toc did you get these codes reset or fixed, I got the exact same codes picked up by Carly although I got the EML on also. The story with mine is EML light came on took to my garage (Not a BMW garage BTW) and they detected EGR valve problem they checked the vucuum which was working okay and said a clean may sort it, however they quoted 4 hours labour to remove and replace. Also I now have a MINI Cooper SD 2.0l N47 engine hence the price They said if they clean and it doesn`t work i`d be looking at another 4 hours labour to replace I choose to have a new EGR fitted 1st as last.
Here`s where it gets interesting my mechanic changed the EGR and when I went to collect that afternoon he admitted he cocked up as he`d never done one before he didn`t realise he should have read the values off the old EGR and input them to the new EGR after fitting. My EML is still on They tried to get the codes from the old EGR without refitting but no luck. I can temporally clear the light but it comes back on after a few start stops. No loss of power though on mine

Did you find the route of this problem Toc?

I am currently experiencing very similar problems to what you have described and it's really annoying me as I don't want to fork out for a new turbo, which is what a garage told me was likely the cause.
