I'd have the M4 over the 1M.

I think I'd prefer a 1M over an M4....just not at that price!! Think it'd have to be VO, low mileage for £40k to £45k. £60k is crazy money. Have people also seen the prices that E46 CSLs are up for? I'm sure I saw one on Penatagon or similar for £70k over Christmas!!!

To each their own bud :). I'd prefer a Supra over both but choosing out the 1M and M4 I'd have an M4.

An M3 or M4 - a development of the V8 M3 using a development of the 135i motor, producing well over 400bhp - you'd have to modify the 1M a lot to keep up and that would probably kill it's value!

Perhaps an M2 would tick more boxes as it's a smaller, slightly lighter car, but a new car with warranty and service pack over a car that's already several years older in design, technology and use...no. I'd rather put M3 brakes and suspension on my 135i and save over £40,000, or save £20,000 for a more sensibly priced 1M - I still wouldn't actually.

Oh yes, someone on here has already done that!

I probably would too, but a 1M is a safe place for your money at the moment, an M4 will be worth 50% of what you pay it in a 2-3 years, that depreciation hurts (I've been bitten in the past). A new M4 lease car is a whole different proposition!

Yes, I'm babbling, but have you driven an S55 M3 or M4? I think they feel so much quicker and more responsive than mildly modified N54/N55s...I wasn't convinced I'd like them until I drove one.

I made a promise to myself a few years back that I'd never buy another M3 (I've had two), way too common a car, massive depreciation potential and a seedy reputation when they become old and leggy.......but I do love them :(

A standard 1M is faster and more responsive than an E90/E92 M3, lightly breathed on they are bloody quick. Most 1Ms are 360/380bhp, it doesn't take much to take it to 415bhp with considerably more torque.

You make very good points...I agree 100%.

I had convinced myself that I needed a V8 M3, until I drove a couple, including a few laps at Bedford. I came away disappointed because I preferred my 135i - yes it's a bit bouncy and slightly unpredictable once it's loaded up in high speed corners...and it really needs a limited slip, but the motor is fantastic. I love the simplicity and unbadged Q-car ability and the fact that it's genuinely quite small. The V8 M3 felt flat and (dare I say it) cumbersome on some of the tight circuit corners, by comparison. Still a marvellous car, but not worth £20k more than my car, to me.

Your car has none of my car's faults - and it's not depreciating. That must be great!

The M4 is a truly extraordinary car, I loved it, but I've decided not to finance up again, pay interest and suffer the depreciation - I'm going to keep and modify my 135i - perhaps I can make it nearly as good as yours...but stealthier.
