Caterham 7 SV R500 Evolution

Post by essiii » Mon Dec 21, 2015 5:45 pm

In the last couple of weeks, the M135i has been joined by a bright yellow friend.

A 2004 Caterham SV (slightly wider and longer chassis than standard) R500 Evolution. For the Evo the 1.8 K Series engine from the standard R500 was bored and stroked, giving it a 2.0 litre capacity, and 250 bhp, with a mental redline somewhere around 9000 rpm.

This wasn't a car I intended to buy, and I certainly didn't intend to buy it just before Christmas! I had a Saturday to myself so headed to Caterham South to test drive a more modern R400 with the Ford Duratec engine in it. The R500 Evo was sitting close by and after a bit of conversation with the sales manager I test drove both. The noise, smell and shear madness of the R500 meant I ended up walking away with a much lighter wallet, having left them a deposit.

Unfortunately it's rained pretty consistently since I collected the car, but I've put a few very steadily driven miles on it, and even at low speeds it puts a grin on my face. Aside from the noise and smells already mentioned, the 6 speed box is a delight to use and the steering is closer to a go kart than the M135! It's not a motorway cruiser - 80mph pulls around 4,500 revs in 6th gear - I'm getting some ear defenders for Christmas!

Anyway, enough talk, here's some pics.

To be fair mate it still feels very much like a car. It's turning the steering wheel that's the most strange part; no assistance and the tiniest adjustment makes a huge difference.

It's certainly a possibility. Just need to get some M badges fitted to it first ;) .

Drove it home to my dad's for Christmas yesterday. Ear plugs on the motorway were very useful! Only used 13 litres of fuel to do 115 miles. I make that 40 mpg?!

Incredible! And a car I need to have in my garage at some point.

There's something about Caterhams that just get under your skin once you've driven one.
I'll never forget my first experince of driving one at a Palmersport even back in the day (with a 2.0 Vauxhall Red Top)
Then some Pinto engined thing I had to deliver to a buyer in Holland.
And finally my first experience in a Levante. F*ck me I have not, and very likely never will ever experience anything as devastating as that thing!

Props to you for putting the miles on yours at this time of the year too.
