Complete BMW Newbie here, so please be gentle with me, and forgive any stupid questions!
My daughter has just bought a 2008(5 118d hatchback, with navigation and iDrive. Private purchase, so no warranty.
The CD/Nav drive won't read the disk which is in it, nor will it eject. Pressing the eject button, or trying to eject by iDrive, doesn't appear to cause any encouraging whirring noises in the drive. When you switch on the system, it says 'Insert Navigation Disk'. Everything else works perfectly, so I'm assuming the disk drive is shot.
I've attached a photo I found on the net which shows the system she has. I'm not sure if it is Business or Professional. There was an 08-2 Business disk supplied with it, but I have no faith that it is the correct disk for the system. Would someone be good enough to identify it for me, and possibly a link on how to remove the drive?
Also, anyone have any dealings with Revtronic in Bradford, who seem to offer a repair service, or any suggestions for somewhere better?
Two people beat me to telling you that that's a pre-2009 iDrive...
As dodgy as it sounds, i'd get my tweezers on the case and try and pluck out the disc. Then try a cd (audio)... If that works, buy a nav disc off ebay.
There is definitely a CD in the crive, as I can see the edge of the disk, and can spin it with the tip of an electrical screwdriver. I tried tweezers, but couldn't get a grip on it, as the slot is quite narrow. Maybe I'll try some double-sided tape on a lollipop stick.
I'm pretty sure the CD/NAV drive looks just like the one in the photo in my first post, but I'll ask her to take a photo so you guys can take a look.
Do the copy map DVDs on eBay work OK? I could also download one from gpsunderground, but I'm not 100% sure which one to try.
Car was registered 16.10.2008 if that makes a difference.

I believe that they had started to roll out the new nav in October of that year. My 58 plate missed the new nav by just a week or so but the easiest way to tell is if the screen pops up from the dash or is fixed in position. The older system had a screen that popped up whilst the new system was fixed in position.

Indeed, while I can't get the pics to work the number of buttons round the controller is an even better give-a-way that works for all BMWs. The older system only has one button while the newer ones have four or more I believe. The pop up screen is only relevant to the 1 series (I think).

Thanks aj - I'll get her to take a photo of the display where it says 'insert nav dvd', and of the controller, and I'll see if you can make any sense of it then!

AFAIK the new CIC system (with fixed display) came with cars produced after 09/08. In those cars you have to slots (unlike the OP), one for a CD in the radio and a lower one for the nav DVD
Maybe if you remove the unit there is a pin hole in the back to manually eject the disc
However, if it is CCC I'm not sure why it would be trying to read from a disc as it would be looking for the maps on the hard drive wouldn't it ? Maybe there are no maps on the hard drive and it is trying to copy the maps off the disc on to the hard drive - is that how you get updates on to a CIC system ?
OK. Think I understand what's going on now. You have the Business satnav not Professional which at the time basically meant you got the older CCC nav but with the newer screen and controller just to really add to the confusion. It means that the DVD is required and either the drive is broken or the disk is jammed.

Yep. This was the business satnav at the time. The new CIC model came out as the professional version and the older pro model became the business model.

Not sure about DIY repairs but the drive itself may be the same as the one used pre 2008/9. Maybe someone else can confirm that? If they are the same then maybe you can do a straight swap out.
As said you have the Business Nav but with the updated screen and controller so you get the one slot that serves as both DVD player for the maps and CD Player - but not at the same time. If you have the Map DVD then perhaps the disc in the player is a DIY CD with a label on it which has come off and is preventing it from ejection. As said - a bit of BFI is needed to get it out - a pair of dentists pliers or the like.
Daft question - does the CD play?
You may find a local car audio specialist who will know the 'tricks of the trade' for excracting a stuck disk. At least you can then establish if the disc is at fault or the player.
The Map discs bought for £25 of the internet from the likes of Mapman work fine if you don't have the skills for a free download.
No, the CD doesn't play. I downloaded an old copy of the TIS and ETK, and the bare DVD drive unit would appear to be available as an exchange item, part number 65839241754.
It also seems that the covers for the aircon panel and CD/DVD drive just unclip from the front, and the drive unit will slide out the front too.
I've downloaded and burned a copy of the 2011 Professional DVD1, so if and when I get to that stage, I'll give it a try.
One way or another I'll report back and let you know how I get on, but it might take a week or so to get Hamilton Jr. to stop driving it for long enough for me to work on it, she loves the car that much. Kids - bless 'em.

Just to finish this one off, it was the drive mechanism that was knackered. It seems that this model was only fitted for a few months, and is a bit of an oddity.
I sent it off to Revtronic, but they didn't have the drive in stock, so had to get one in. Even so, the total turnaround time was 6 days. I have to say, the service was excellent, and they kept me up to date with everything that went on. No affiliation, but I would recommend them highly.
The total cost, including VAT and return courier, was £260. Compared to the £700++++ that BMW quoted, it was a much cheaper result.
The invoice shows the drive they fitted as a DVD M3 4.6. If you Google that, you can find them for about £120.
Knowing what I know now, I would have a go at replacing it myself. It's a shame that experience is so costly! I hope that this helps someone in the future.
