Hi guys,

I have done numerous searches and can't find an answer. I get a lot of results saying people switch it off with a button either near the engine start button, or near the gear lever. I can't find either!

So, can anyone give me a definitive answer as to how to turn it off?

Tom

The auto stop/start button, should you have one is in the bottom row of buttons (you may only have one active button, depending on options) below the heating controls.

It's an A with a circled arrow round it and the word "OFF" - in mine at least.

I very rarely touch mine, but then I very rarely drop the clutch in neutral so it doesn't activate (I even leave it parked in reverse, 'cause the handbrake is not to be trusted).

Don't press it three times in rapid succession, you will be forcibly ejected through the roof :P

You can have the car coded to remember it's last setting, rather than defaulting to 'On'.

Auto start stop is awful! Wish I'd have removed it completely! The amount of times
I swore because the bloody car turned off at lights/traffic. Terrible

At least BMW have realised it's awful, and now put the Stop/Start next to the starter button to make your start-up procedure easier.

Yeah good on BMW for realising. It used to actually make me mad. A definite flaw in design and everyone needs to turn it off, can't be doing any good for the car

It's nothing to do with engine preservation or design, it's purely to tick a few EEC emissions boxes which determine the tax group.

I must admit i haven't got that much hate for the Start Stop function in cars. Well at least i hadn't until i bought a BMW.
I had an alfa mito, (given it was a petrol) but the start stop wasn't even noticable and you could never beat it. In the 1er it just seems sluggish is it because it is diesel or is it the same for the petrol 1's?
