Automatic Boot Spring Open

Postby tahiblue » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:49 pm

Following on from this thread... http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18057

* This is for informational purposes only, carry out any work at your own risk.

** I used 25mm Light Load springs with 3/4" tap washers.

*** I only wanted my boot to partially open, use different springs if you want the boot to fully open (http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18057&start=85)

Image

Gently push up on this clip and it slides out the top.
Image

Image

Image

*** PROP UP THE BOOT LID ***

Simply pull the strut towards you and it will pop off the mount
Image

Image

Wrap and clamp both the shaft of the strut and the top. The shaft will need to be clamped tightly (ooh er missus).
Image

Cloth removed to show you what it is to actually clamp. Turn anti-clockwise on the head to remove.
Image

Image

Image

3/4" tap washers. They are a very tight fit!
Image

Screw unto the thread.
Image

Then brute force and push unto the shaft.
Image

Slide on spring.
Image

Refit head and pull washer and spring to the top.
Image

Refit head to socket and replace the clip.
Image

Stand back and push the button.
Image

I'll probably take them off again and paint them black, maybe use a slightly smaller washer to make it look better.

Will the same springs in "option 5" be fine for the boot to pop open in an M sport coupe or would it be too powerful and hard to close?

Why they didn't design the boot to spring open when you press the keyfob button is beyond me! It is possibly the most annoying part of the ownership experience- when you have your hands full of shopping bags and have to wrestle the lid open or put the bags down to open the boot.

I have thought about doing this mod but wasnt 100% on how to do it & where to get the parts & the correct parts from,

quality "how to" post, looks easy enough. thankx

But can any one post links to places we can buy the parts & for the different springs for half & full opening, so we know we're buying the rights parts.

cheers.

:chin: Or someone could buy the parts make a "how to" print it off put it together & sell it on ebay.

so i look through the other posts with the info & links & ordered my springs from Bearingboys
http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/V20x25_Light_Load_Die_Spring-31026-p
& ordered the V20x25 light die spring as said on the post bellow

so i've just fitted them & it only opens half way :?

could this be because my gas struts are worn as there 6 years old or i need a higher rigidity spring Or Anit999 lied?

im thinking i mite try the medium load springs B20x25mm @ rigidity 8.90 Or B20x32mm @ rigidity 7.00 as they should give i a bit more umf.

If it opens half way then it's not the springs - the springs only open it the first foot or so. After that it's all about the gas struts really.

Read through this post for more info on varying rates of spring length/size/rating success.

viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18057

I bought my springs from bearing boys and the washers (3/4" flat tap washers) off amazon.

People have varying results with springs, but if you want it to really pop open I'd suggest going with a medium load 32mm spring (I do not take any responsibility if your car explodes as a result of fitting them).
